NSAC to Provide Three Student MMR Clinics
In an effort to keep you informed of the activities and services
being provided to students this fall, please be aware of three
upcoming MMR clinics being held in early September.
As you are aware, Nova Scotia has been experiencing an outbreak
of mumps. The majority of mumps cases have been in young adults
with almost 40 per cent being university and college students.
In Canada, people born after 1970 have likely received only
one dose of MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine, as a young
child. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends
that students at post-secondary institutions should be offered
a second dose of MMR vaccine.
Therefore, students are invited to attend an MMR clinic at
NSAC (if you have not already obtained a second MMR from your
family doctor prior to the start of school). This is available,
free of charge, to students. Clinic dates and times are as
follows - first come first serve.
Sept.10(Monday) 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m last names A-M
Sept.11(Tuesday)1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m last names Mac-Z
Sept.12 (Wednesday) 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m everyone unable to
attend earlier clinics

The Last Class of Animal Health Technologists
The Animal Health Technology (AHT) Program graduated its last
class in May this year. The three-year AHT Program has been
replaced by a two-year Veterinary Technology (VT) Program.
As a requirement of registration in most provinces and states,
graduates must write and pass an exam based on workplace knowledge
and skills. This year again all graduates passed the exam (no
AHT from NSAC has ever failed it) and stayed ahead of the overall
average scores for Canadian and United States candidates.
The VT Program accepted its first class
of twenty-four students in September 2006 and will graduate
its first class in May of 2008.
Students in the VT Program have two regular
semesters each year and are occupied throughout the summer
between the two years in internships at the Atlantic Veterinary
College and here on campus. There is also a six-week externship
in general veterinary practice.

Precision Agriculture Course
The Department of Engineering welcomes Adjunct Professor,
Dr. Arnold Schumann as a guest lecturer, joining NSAC’s
Dr. Qamar uz Zaman in teaching Precision Agriculture Technologies.
Dr. Schumann, an Associate Professor at the Citrus Research
and Education Center, University of Florida, will be providing
eight lectures and four labs via video conferencing. He will
also be visiting campus in October to meet the students, faculty
and deliver a public seminar on Precision Agriculture in horticultural
crops.
Precision Agriculture Technologies is offered as both an
undergraduate course (ENGN 3003) and as a graduate module for
Engineering, Plant and Environmental Sciences students.
Dr. Zaman, who joined the NSAC Engineering in December 2006,
held a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Schumann at the Citrus
Research Center from 2002 to 2005. Dr. Schumann is also a collaborator
in Dr. Zaman’s Precision Agriculture Research Program
at NSAC.
Dr. Zaman would like to thank Dr. Norman Goodyear in Plant Science for helping
him set up the video conferencing system and Dr. Rob Gordon, Dean of Research
for providing resources which makes Dr. Schumann’s lectures possible.
