Water Management:
Understanding Issues in the Rural Context
A Maritime Event Rural Water Policy Symposium November 8,
2006
NSAC recognizes the considerable challenges that
exist with respect to the management of water resources in our
rural communities. As a result, NSAC is pleased to announce
that it is hosting a water policy symposium on November
8, 2006. The symposium is being supported through the
NSAC Class of 1956, as part of their 50th anniversary activities,
Agriculture and Agri-food Canada and the Nova Scotia Federation
of Agriculture.
Funding for the symposium is provided by the Agricultural
Policy Framework, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

Welcome to New Employees
The
Department of Engineering welcomes Heather Hughes as its new
Physics Lab Demonstrator. Heather has her B. Sc. in Physics
from Mount Allison University and her M. Sc. in Physics from
Dalhousie University.
Heather has spent the last eight years as a sessional lecturer
in physics and astronomy at the University of Prince Edward
Island and occasionally Mount Allison University. As well, she
has worked part-time as the NSERC Sponsored Publicity and Promotions
Officer for the Faculty of Science at UPEI over the last year
and a half.
As a native of Truro, Heather returns home with her own family
- husband Stephen, son Justin, age 7, and daughter Erin, age
3.

of Agricultural Science)
Dr. Leonel Avendaño Reyes is the Project Leader for the
Mexican Consortium for the North America Mobility Program.
The North American Mobility Projects’ main objective
is to facilitate exchange of students and faculty of partner
institutions in Canada, the USA and Mexico.
Leonel is a full Professor in Animal Physiology at ICA, UABC.
He received his Ph. D. from Mississippi State and his M Sc for
UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónomia de México).
His current research focus is on the effect of heat stress on
dairy and beef cattle. He has been a faculty member at ICA for
the past 17 years, during which time he has also served as the
Coordinator of both the Ph D and M Sc programs.
Funding for the Canadian institutions (NSAC & Marine Institute)
for this project is provided by the Government of Canada through
Human Resource Development Canada, International Academic Mobility

Marketing Campaign 2006
As part of our recruitment efforts for 2006, NSAC will be providing
a Virtual Campus Tour for prospective students on the NSAC Website.
Allura Communications Ltd is coordinating this effort and will
be on campus on October 3rd and 4th gathering
footage of the campus, student life, classes, labs and more. This
virtual tour is meant to provide prospective students with a taste
of what it might be like to live in Truro and attend the NSAC.
The tour will be led by VIC, our Virtual Interactive Counselor
and will be filmed in a guerilla-cam style and format.
We hope you will welcome and support VIC and his team on October
3rd and 4th while they are on campus.

Good News from AVC
We received news last week from AVC on this year's first year
class. Sixteen students with NSAC backgrounds are in the
Class of 2010. That's a pretty good percentage of the
35 Canadian students admitted. Most impressive this year was the
fact that eight of our 2nd year students were successful in getting
into AVC.
Update from EMC
The Enrollment Management Council met on September 21 for its
first meeting of the new school year. A welcome was extended
to Student Union representatives Ashley Gillies and Bryce Drummond.
A report was presented from the ad hoc committee that had reviewed
the analysis of the results of the student satisfaction survey.
It was agreed that a presentation on the SSS be taken to Senior
Management.
A summary of the evaluations of the three Advanced Connections
workshops held over the summer was presented. Two more sessions
are planned for November 15 and December 13. Spaces are open
yet for both sessions.
Three working groups were established. The use of working groups
will enable the EMC to be more efficient in its meeting times.
The working groups will have more time to brainstorm and consider
issues on narrower topics than is reasonable for the EMC to
be spending time on. The working groups will be able to bring
recommendations to the EMC and also have action considered on
items referred by the EMC. Anyone wishing to serve on one of
these EMC sub-committees: Responsible Academic Growth, Marketing
and Recruitment and Student Success; are asked to contact David
Percival, EMC Chair.
The working groups will be meeting over the next couple weeks
and reporting to the EMC at its next meeting on October
19.
Jim Goit presented an update on the marketing campaign for the
coming year. It features a change in the brand and positioning
of NSAC with its marketing. A new tagline — Embrance Your
World — replaces 'Science Applied to Life' with our marketing
this year. The tactics of the year's marketing campaign include
TV closed captioning, in school posters, banner internet advertising
and the development of a new web portal for prospecive students
with separate links for high school students, international
students and mature students. VIC (our Virtual Interactive Counsellor)
comes to life this year. He will be visiting campus this week
to film for an interactive campus tour.
The Registrar reported on a new writing centre, the increase
in student numbers and a retention study conducted over the
summer.
Two positions are opening on the EMC for the next two years.

a term on the EMC, nominations are being accepted by email to
Dave Percival or Brian Crouse until Thursday October
5.
