Appointment of New Department Head
of Environmental Sciences
Effective May 1, 2006, Dr. Glenn Stratton will become Head
of the Department of Environmental Sciences. Dr. Stratton is
a accomplished teacher and scholar, well-known at NSAC for his
tireless mentoring of both undergraduate and graduate students.
We wish Dr. Stratton much success.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Olson
for his years of service as Department Head. He’s worked
hard to foster the strong sense of community that exists within
the Department of Environmental Sciences, and I’m sure
his enthusiasm will continue to support the department as he
steps back into his full-time faculty role.

The Results are in for AAU’s Study
Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) released the results
of its much anticipated Economic Impact for Universities in
the Atlantic Provinces study. The study, which was funded by
ACOA, identified the significant economic impact of universities
in our region. The study revealed that universities contribute
$4.4 billion in direct and indirect benefits to Atlantic Canada’s
economy. Dr. Axel Meisen, Chair of AAU and President of Memorial
University of Newfoundland, said that the study shows that there
is a definite economic impact, but also a wider benefit to Atlantic
Canada in having a strong university sector.

Recruitment Update
Hello!
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve updated you on
what’s happening with recruitment. Craig and I have been
very busy traveling and with on-campus activities.
Before I go any further, I would like to thank Russ Campbell
for taking some recruitment materials to his local high school.
As you know, Russ is one of our most enthusiastic students,
who helps when help is needed, participates in various school
activities and remains one of our top students. I’d like
to also congratulate Russ on his achievements here at NSAC and
future accomplishments that I am certain will come!
On that note, Brian has been awarding scholarships to students
from all over the Atlantic provinces and we look forward to
meeting them this fall as NSAC students. Also, the accepted
Veterinary Technology students are being contacted, and a large
number of those not accepted are still opting to come to the
university and are applying to various programs.
Craig has been busy preparing for his big trip to the USA-
where he’ll be traveling from May 2nd to May 15th. He
is scheduled to present NSAC to over 2000 students as well as
hosting a Guidance Counselor’s brunch. When he returns,
we’ll have a full and detailed description of his adventure.
I’ve been busy working with several groups who will be
touring NSAC and with Ag Awareness preparing for Ag Zone. Also,
I visited two schools in New Brunswick on Thursday and Friday
where I met over 1500 students partaking in Career Fairs. NSAC
was one of three N.S. universities invited to attend, as we
offer unique programs.
Over the past two weeks, recruitment has hosted several prospective
students, touring them through campus and meeting with program
representatives. Applications continue to arrive at Brenda’s
desk and Craig and I are collecting a database of those students
who have asked for a tour. Our goal is to bring these students
to campus in order to convert these applicants into students.
In another effort, we’ve contacted all prospective students
who have not applied to NSAC, but have shown interest in this
past year. Five of us managed to communicate with over 600 grade
12 students where we’ve confirmed that there are many
who are still in the process of applying to NSAC. In addition,
we’ve gathered information on where these students want
to study and the programs that they are interested in.
