Promote NSAC While Strengthening Ties
in the Industry
Agrifest is the most comprehensive event for strengthening
relationships with the Nova Scotia ag industry. NSAC’s
participation at Agrifest two years ago intensified NSAC’s
relationships with industry leaders and helped us spread the
word of the work we do at our university.
In order to have another successful year at this 50-acre outdoor
agriculture show, we need staff, faculty and student volunteers
to take part in the event. Why not spend some much-needed time
on maintaining those relationships you have with the industry?
Or take a day to tell industry members about your service or
your latest project. You can accomplish your professional tasks
and have a blast at this interactive, fun event.
For spending a bit of your time at Agrifest, we will supply
you with a quality piece of NSAC clothing. Help us put the best
NSAC face forward to really educate people on the wide range
of things we do here!

What's Going on at AgriTECH Park?
Nova
Scotia Cattle Producers recently set up headquarters at AgriTECH
Park. This organization represents the interests of 1200 beef
producers to government and has evolved into areas of industry
development and sustainability. The organization takes an active
role in sponsoring primary, investigative and market development
research initiatives. The head office is located in the Administration
Building, 90 Research Drive.
The Atlantic BioVenture Centre, also located at AgriTECH Park,
has been actively pursuing research funding in its efforts to
transform Atlantic primary bioresources into innovative high
value bioproducts. Dr. Richard Ablett, CEO, was successful in
his AIF proposal entitled, “Creating New Wealth from Atlantic
Bioresources”. This $4.9 Million project focuses on the
conversion of underutilized marine and terrestrial bioresources
into higher value products for the cosmeceutical, nutraceutical,
animal feed supplement and functional food ingredients sectors.
Dr. Ablett is located in the Administration Building and can
be reached at 893-4152 or by e-mail at rablett@nsac.ca.
The RCMP is leasing office space in the Fundy Building, AgriTECH
Park, on a short term basis. While not in keeping with the Park’s
mandate to support the growth of innovations in the agriculture
and environmental sectors, the Board recognizes the need to
increase occupancy rates at the facility to help offset increasing
operating costs. The RCMP’s Major Crime Unit and Drug
Division are located at the Park.
The Annapolis Residence is getting a much needed facelift.
The building is used as a residence for conference guests and
it becomes home to dozens of international students during the
summer months during the annual ESL camp sponsored by Chignecto
Central Regional School Board. The building received new windows
and installation of vinyl siding is nearing completion.

Recruitment Update
Happy June!
Craig and I have been working on several projects and volunteering
with campus activities. As you are aware, Ag Zone was held on
Friday, May 26th and Monday, May 29th. We had loads of fun touring
groups and would like to thank the committee for inviting us
to participate again this year.
We’ve also met with the TAG group to discuss our ESL
summer science camps and are happy that we can host two this
year, one from India and the other from Mexico. We look forward
to working with Judy, Anne and the rest of the committee. More...

WCB Launches New Interactive Website
Dear Colleagues,
Gail McClare, our OHS Specialist from HR-CSU, has asked that
I pass
along the following website and I'm happy to do so. I hope you'll
take a
few moments and take a look at it.
WCB of NS and DEL have recently launched an interactive website
designed to educate young workers to some of the injuries they
could
suffer on the job. The premise is a "boutique" where
you can buy limbs
to replace the ones you've lost. It's www.notworthit.ca
.
While I think each of us are doing a great job of protecting
our health
and safety, we have to be continually mindful of our young workers
and
the fact they're more likely to have an accident due to length
of time
on the job, life/work experience and their eagerness to do a
good job
(not that the rest of us aren't keen!).
I hope you'll enjoy it and pass it along to your young workers/summer
students, or your own kids.
Thanks,
Tim Delaney

NSAC Photo of the Week
If you have a great photograph that you think should be included
in a future E-Bulletin, please forward your photograph submission
to the NSAC E-Bulletin newsdesk at news@nsac.ca
and be sure to include a brief description of the photograph,
where on campus it was taken and identify the people in the
photograph if applicable.
Photo of the week for June 5:

Construction began earlier this morning on Cumming Drive from
the intersection at College Road,on the Langille Athletic Centre
side, to the rear parking lot of Cox Institute (west end). This
closure will allow permanent repairs to be made to the steam tunnel
which ruptured and was temporarily repaired during the winter
months. Construction is scheduled to take place until June 12.
However, unforeseen difficulties may extend construction.
