Library Cancels Christmas and New Years
Well, actually, just the hours between. The Library will be closed
for the holidays and for the period between Christmas and New
Years day. Library staff (Bonnie, Janelle, Joanne, Sherree, Verna)
and Student Assistants (Sharlene, Krista, Emily, Manasah, Holly,
Elyssa, Katherine, Shuyi) wish everyone - library users and those
who are not, every joy of the season! Seasons Greetings to one
and all and Best Wishes for a Happy and Peaceful New Year.
Reminder
Pepsi Cola Bottling have a contract with NSAC for full service
vending. In that contract , and because of obvious safety issues,
it is clear that the machines cannot be tampered with, moved
, adjusted or otherwise altered by anyone other than qualified
Pepsi Technicians. If you have any questions or concerns , the
campus contact for the Pepsi Representatives is Judy Smith (6661
or 7915). If the machines are "out of order" there
is a 1 - 800 number posted on all machines for service. Thanks.
Recruitment Update
Hello and Happy Holidays from Recruitment!
Over the past few weeks we’ve been preparing for the
new year and happily assessing the past. Since last January,
we’ve seen an increase in campus involvement in recruiting
activity and Nick, Craig, Brian and I would like to thank the
registry, teaching staff, graduate students, laboratory technicians
and administration for their help in all of our efforts. Since
last January, we’ve hosted over 1200 grade 10, 11 and
12 students and with your help, gave them memorable experiences.
As a reminder, we begin our new year with our third follow-up
to new prospective students by inviting them to University Day
– being held this year on March 2nd. Last year we had
over 150 high school students attend, with 45 student volunteers
helping throughout the day. We hope to have as many student
ambassadors again this year!
To re-cap this year’s recruitment travels, we attended
the AARAO fairs from Mid September to just last week, visiting
all of the high schools in the Maritime Provinces. This schedule
has no breaks and Nick and Craig covered a lot of territory
from the South Shore NS to the West Coast of NFLD. Both commented
that there is a definite spike in interest from prospective
students. Registry is reporting that more applicants are being
entered in the system than compared to this time last year.
Bermuda, New England, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico and Korea were covered
as well, with a prospective database from each country resulting.
We’ve already taken independent visits to a few schools
in Halifax, PEI and Cape Breton. This is significant as the
independent visits usually take place beginning in January.
Local communities saw us at 24 events over the past year and
we were happy to host guidance counselors from both Boston and
Bermuda, in addition to those from Nova Scotia.
In all, Recruitment has definitely gained momentum and I’d
like to congratulate my team on a job well done!
All the best and see you in January!
Monica

Early Stage Commercialization Fund 2006-2007
The Industry Liaison Office, in partnership with InnovaCorp,
is offering an opportunity to researchers, students and staff
of NSAC to compete for financial support for early-stage research
projects with commercial potential. Awards are project-specific
and activities may include product identification and development,
field studies, prototype testing and market assessment. Eligible
expenses will typically include: part-time and summer student
research assistance; materials and supplies; marketing research,
etc.
The total amount of the fund for Nova Scotia universities and
colleges for this year is $150,000 with an anticipated average
award of $10,000. Up to twelve (12) awards are available in
the 2006/2007 competition. The application deadline
is 4:00 PM, January 30, 2007 with a notification of decision
on February 28, 2007. Projects may commence immediately
thereafter.
Detailed guidelines and application forms are found at the

Operation Clean Sweep
The NS obsolete pesticide cleanup is underway (code named "Operation
Clean Sweep"). We have 12-13 collection sites established
across the province. Some have their Wranglers (collection containers)
now and the rest will get them soon. Please see attached
notice.
Information is being widely distributed, and the big issue
now is getting the word out! Any questions, contact Brian MacCulloch
in Kentville. macculbc@gov.ns.ca
