Congratulations to Jill Rogers
We wish to extend congratulations to Jill Rogers (Research & Graduate Studies) on her April 21st nuptials to her fiancé Larry Laseur. Best wishes to both of them on this joyous occasion.
Convocation Update
Approximately 150 students will graduate May 5th, 2006 at the 101st NSAC convocation. In addition to the graduation ceremonies and awards to faculty and staff there will be two honorary degrees conferred upon men who have had a major impact on NSAC and the field of agricultural science. Mr. DIck Huggard NSAC Class of 1956) and Dr. Murray McLaughlin (NSAC Class of 1966) will both receive Honorary Doctorate degrees. Check out the details for convocation at http://nsac.ca/convocation/
Student NSERC Summer Scholarships
NSAC students have been very successful in securing funding under the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards program (USRA's) for summer 2006. This highly competitive program will help fund these students while they work on their research projects. The following ten students and their supervisors are to be congratulated for their success.

60th Spring Meet Woodsman Competition

Hosted by NSAC, the 60th Annual Spring Meet Woodsmens Competition
was held Friday and Saturday April 21 and 22. Friday’s events were held at Kiwanis Park , where under very cool conditions , 17 teams from 6 Universities and Colleges completed 7 of the 19 events. (Singles , doubles and portage canoeing, packboard races, log burling, log decking, and
pulp pits.) The participants included NSAC, Colby, Finger Lakes, Unity, University of Maine, and Dartmouth.
Saturday , under much better conditions , the rest of the events were held at the NSAC Woodlot. NSAC teams faired very well with NSAC Mens 1 and NSAC Women’s 1 both placing first; NSAC Women’s 2 team were second , while the Men’s 2 team finished 5th.
First place events for NSAC included:
NSAC Women’s 1 - cross cut , pole climb, pulp pits, single buck, standing block chop, swede saw ,underhand chop, log burling , crosscut to hell , packboard relay, and super swede
NSAC Women’s 2 – log decking, quarter split
NSAC Men’s 1 – cross cut, pole climb, pulp pits, quarter split, single buck, log burling, cross cut to hell
NSAC Men’s 2 – log decking
Congratulations to Coaches Marvin Weeks, Shaun Nelson, Scott Read and Trevor Dillman for the successful 60th Annual Woodsmen Spring Meet.
Is Orchard Waste a Valuable Bio-Resource?
Apple orchards produce large amounts of biomass as waste products as a result of spring (dormant) and summer pruning and removing excess fruitlets (thinning) for crop load management. Every year, growers burn or abandon approximately 1 metric tonne of orchard waste per acre of apple production. Dr. Vasantha explains how his research program is attempting to turn this into valuable bio products. More
NSAC Hosts Truro Rotary Club Leadership Seminar
The Truro Rotary Club is hosting a Leadership Seminar for 30-40 grade 11 & 12 's
Wed. Apr 26th on campus. Brian Crouse will be speaking to the group. Designed for full time students from the local area between who are between16 and 18 who possess leadership qualities, the leadership conference encourages the realization of leadership potential. It is an excellent opportunity for these future leaders to be made aware of NSAC.
