Information Research Supported By Grants
Two Library projects have been successful in attracting grant support
through the AgNIC Alliance, an international project of the National
Agricultural Library of the United States. The NSAC MacRae Library
is a member of the AgNIC Alliance. The project, entering its tenth
year, is a collaboration of agriculture librarians across North America
and around the world to provide specialized access to authoritative
digital agricultural materials on the World Wide Web. Institutions,
mostly university libraries, agree to sponsor web sites in their selected
areas of expertise. NSAC has sponsored the Wild Blueberry Network
Information Centre since 1997. The most recent statistics indicate
that the site has attracted over a million enquiries and is still
recording an average of 318 queries per day. NSAC researchers in wild
blueberries are known world-wide through the web site, and are familiar
faces to colleagues from around the world when they attend international
conferences. A second project under development by the Organic Agriculture
Centre of Canada, will develop a unique digital collection of scientific
and technical information specially selected for consumers of organic
foods. This will become part of the OACC web site. The OACC is already
well-known in Canada as a centre of excellence in organic agriculture.
When completed, the NSAC name will become associated world-wide with
excellence in organic agriculture, through the AgNIC Alliance.
BIG BROTHERS~BIG SISTERS
- WANTED
Volunteers for the In-School Mentor Program!!!
Currently we have four wonderful NSAC students who volunteer as
Mentors and give their time to help a child. The program is all
about having fun and helping a young person… and it only takes
one hour a week during the school year. As a volunteer mentor, you’ll
be matched with a student at one of the local schools where you
will build a positive new relationship that’s beneficial to
the child and fun for both of you. You’ll spend time together
doing fun activities that will help build the child’s self-esteem
and confidence. Arts, crafts, sports, games, computers, baking…sometimes
it might be just hanging out and talking. How can you sign up? Call
Big Brothers~Big Sisters @ 895-6966 for more information or to book
a presentation outlining our programs

Plantation Agriculture in German East Africa: Struggles Over Labour
and Production
German colonialism introduced plantations as the 'modern' way to
produce agricultural products in German East Africa (now Tanzania).
While seemingly invincible, this plan soon encountered resistance
from Africans in ways that both Africanized colonial plantations
and eventually led to a shift towards small-scale African commodity
production.

Giving Credit Where
It’s Due
NSAC is launching a new program to help NSAC faculty and staff get
the kudos they deserve! The Limelight Project has been developed
to help NSAC faculty and staff nominate themselves or fellow employees
for professional awards and honours. No matter how confident we
are in our abilities, winning an award from our peers is often great
icing on the cake. The Limelight Project is here to help. You can
access a regularly updated list of awards programs available with
related nomination information and deadlines. The Limelight Project
can provide you layout and design assistance to make sure your nomination
sends the right message. And we can promote award nominees and award
winners to NSAC, its many stakeholder groups and the media. Since
it’s early in the project, any information you might have
on additional professional awards programs that aren’t currently
on our site, please forward to Sarah Morris to be included in our
list of awards. Please visit our new Limelight
Project page and consider nominating yourself or another for
one of the many awards listed.
