Summer Splash
The third week of Kids Discovery Day Camps (put on by Athletics
and Scotia Pool) has finished and the theme "Summer Splash"
was a hit in the hot weather! The campers aged 5 - 12 participated
in activities in the morning, in the afternoon they had swim
instruction for an hour and then they finished the day with
a recreational swim. Campers were in appropriately levels and
although not in an official "badge program" they received
additional instruction in the skills required to complete their
level.
The upcoming July 25 - 29 week is "Local Hero's Week".

BioPort Atlantic 2005
With BioPort Atlantic 2005 (September 27-29) fast
approaching, BioNova wants to announce a special offer for its
members to make it easier to attend this year’s conference.
For members in good standing (i.e., with dues paid up), after
one person from your company or organization registers at the
discounted member’s rate ($275 before Sept. 9, $375 after
that), any additional person from your company or organization
can register for 50% of the member’s rate ($137.50 before
Sept. 9, $187.50 after that). It would be helpful if you could
bundle multiple registration forms from each organization but
if that isn’t possible, we’ll keep an eye on registrations
from members to ensure that you get the discount.
Feel free to contact Marli MacNeil if you have questions about
this offer or BioPort Atlantic in general. Keep an eye on the
website (www.bionova.ns.ca/bioport) for program news. We’re
looking forward to seeing you there!

Tree Fruit BioProduct Research Program,
NSAC
invites you to a seminar…
“Advancements in Fruit Crop Research in Japan”
Apple Research in NIFTS: by Dr. Hideo Bessho
Regulation of Anthocyanin Biosynthesis in Grapes: by Dr. Shozo
Kobayashi
Physiological Functions of Japanese Citrus Fruits: by Dr. Kazunori
Ogawa
National Institute of Fruit Tree Science (NIFTS), Morioka, Japan
Date: Wednesday August 03, 2005
Time: 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm
Place: Riverview Room, Jenkins Hall, NSAC,
Truro
Six Japanese tree fruit researchers are visiting NSAC as a
part of the international collaborative research effort of the
Tree Fruit BioProduct Research Program at NSAC. The investigative
travel opportunity will permit both sides to share knowledge
and best practices in advancing tree-fruit R&D activity
in each country and in establishing possible collaborative research
between Canada and Japan.
Some of the common goals of the intended international collaborative
research would be: (i) to create a new body of scientific knowledge
and technology to develop superior-quality apple cultivars,
having enhanced health-promoting constituents, (ii) to establish
new technological advancement to preserve the nutritional and
nutraceutical value of apples during storage and processing,
and (iii) to investigate the biological functions of tree-fruit-derived
functional components, their health benefits and possible medicinal
applications.
The National Institute of Fruit Tree Science (NIFTS), Morioka
is one of 11 specialized research institutes of the core institute
for federal agricultural research in Japan, the National Agricultural
Research Organization (NARO). Presently, one of the major research
emphases for NIFTS is the development of molecular and physiological
technologies to enhance the quality, functional ingredients
and storage life of fruit crops such as apples.
Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Laurie Eagle (leagles@nsac.ns.ca;
902-893-2635) or Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe (vrupasinghe@nsac.ns.ca;
902-893-6623) by July 29th 10.00 a.m.
Learn to build a water feature, hands-on!
We’re offering you a chance to experience NSAC’s
hands-on teaching style, well, hands-on! Environmental Horticulture
and Recruitment are hosting FunBuild 2005 on Open House Day
this week and we are offering 10 spots to NSAC staff and faculty
who would love to take part.
What a treat to get to experience NSAC from a student’s
point of view! Tracey MacKenzie will take you through the whole
project (and do most of the really heavy lifting) and you’ll
get a chance to learn some new skills you can use at home. You’ll
get to spend the day with other members of our community and
enjoy a complimentary lunch. But be prepared - We think it’s
going to attract quite a crowd of spectators during Open House!
If you’d like your name put into the draw for one of the
ten spots available, send an e-mail to
jtingley@nsac.ns.ca by noon on Tuesday, July 26th.
She’ll let you know if you’re one of the lucky winners!
