September 7, 2004 --- Week 195
Strong Application Numbers
for NSAC
The number of applications to NSAC this year has increased substantially
over last. According to our Registrar, Wayne
Paquet, overall application numbers have increased 11.0 percent
over last year. Last year at this time, application numbers were
down 7.0 percent. B.Sc. applications are up 23 percent this year
whereas last year they were only up 1.2 percent. Overall degree-level
applications are up 18.2 percent this year (includes B.Sc., B.Tech.
and Engineering) where they were only up 1.7 percent last year.
Technology and technician program applications are down 3 percent
this year, significantly better compared to the 20.3 percent drop
last year. At present, we have received 280 admission deposits for
new and returning students compared to 236 deposits received by
this date last year. Wayne is careful to point out that application
numbers are not the same as enrolment numbers. However, this is
a strong indication that awareness levels in NSAC's market are rising.
What nice news to kick off this academic year!

Breakfast
Television will be doing an on-site shoot on the morning of

that is open to all ages, to the Golden Masters (60 years +) and
every age in between. Entrance fees are $16 for Run Nova Scotia
members and $18 for non-members. For more information, you can contact
Judy Smith at the Langille

Norman Goodyear Announcement
The Federal Minister of Human Resources and Skills
Development Canada was in Truro last week to announce the North
America Mobility Program. The program evolved out of NAFTA and promotes
the exchange of students, culture and language among Canada, the
US and Mexico. Our very own Dr. Norman Goodyear was the key driver
behind the Rural Sustainability in Agriculture and Aquaculture,
a key initiative coming out of the mobility program. NSAC is the
lead Canadian institution (partnered with MUN's Marine Institute)
and the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California and Virginia Polytechnic
University are the lead institutions in Mexico and the US respectively.
This program will ensure eight NSAC students and seven Marine Institute
students can study in the US or Mexico for a semester. The program
begins in September 2005 and a special selection committee will
be set up at NSAC to evaluate applications from interested students.
According to Dr. Goodyear, the program's project leader, this program
is important for NSAC and its students. "In North America,
our agriculture is becoming more and more entwined and interdependent.
What happens in Mexico and the US in sustainable agriculture and
aquaculture matters because it affects our industry in Canada. It
is important we train our students to fit into an increasingly global
market and industry."
Canada Post Approves NSAC
Centennial Stamp
Canada Post has announced that it has approved NSAC's Centennial
stamp. The stamp will come out in winter 2005 to coincide with NSAC's
Centennial year celebrations. Details on the chosen design are coming
soon.
NSAC Chorale Up and Running
The NSAC Chorale will begin its second year with a meeting on Thursday,
Sept.16th at 6:00 p.m. in the Athletic Centre classroom. Open to
students and staff, rehearsals will take place on Thursday evenings
from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Riverview Room of Jenkins Hall. The first
rehearsal is Sept.23rd. Performance dates are tentatively set for
Dec.2, Feb.13, and Mar.25. Our director is, once again, Cathy Weldin,
and she is joined this year by our accompanist, Ann Legere. The
chorale would like to strongly encourage all interested to attend
the initial meeting. If you are unable to attend or would like more
information on our repertoire and schedule, contact Kent
Loughead at 893-6660.

here at NSAC. Monica will be spending this week becoming more acquainted
with the programs and people at NSAC, so if you’re near the
Registry, stop in and say hello to the newest representative for
NSAC! And Craig Curley,
Jenna Tingley and Brian
Crouse are back for what’s sure to be another successful
