NSAC Career Fair - October
6
The October 6th Career Fair will be the largest career event of
the year on the NSAC campus. The Career Fair is an opportunity for
all students, first year through graduate students, as well as NSAC
alumni to explore the world of work, and to learn about employment
opportunities, or for those seeking internships or full time employment,
the Fair benefits all participants.
The Career Fair can provide an opportunity to meet several potential
employers at one time. The goal of the NSAC Career Fair is to introduce
students to sectors of business and industry and to broaden their
perspective of the professional opportunities that exist.
We hope that the Campus Community will make an effort to attend
the Career Fair, Wednesday October 6th from 1:00 to 4:00
pm.
Visit the Career Fair Website at

Hurricane Ivan
wreaks Havoc
Recently Hurricane Ivan wreaked havoc throughout the Carribean
and did significant damage to the island of Jamaica. The College
of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) received significant
damage to their infrastructure and at this point classes have been
suspended. NSAC has a long-standing relationship with that institution,
and we currently offer a joint B.Tech degree with CASE. Several
faculty and staff and many students from NSAC have visited CASE
over the last 15 years, or so.
The NSAC Jamaica Advisory Committee recently held a meeting of
interested parties to determine what responses would be appropriate
to assist our colleagues at CASE. Of course, we have immediately
given our moral support, and now we are asking for those members
of the campus community, who are able, to make a cash donation to
the 'Jamaica/CASE Hurricane Relief Fund'. We are in the process
of establishing a bank account. In addition, we will be locating
collection jars strategically around campus. Please give generously!
Please stay tuned, to the NSAC Noticeboard, for further details
and updates as events unfold in the next several
AAT Teaching Showcase
If you are interested in attending this year’s AAT Teaching
Showcase (Transitions across the Undergraduate Programme), it is
Saturday, October 30 at Dalhousie University. This
one day event brings together persons interested in innovative teaching,
to share their experiences with colleagues in the area. The Instructional
Development Committee of NSAC can sponsor some people for this one
day event. If you are interested, check out their website at:
http://www.dal.ca/~clt/showcase2004.html
If you decide you would like to attend, please contact me (afitzgerald@nsac.ns.ca)
before October 7th. If numbers warrant, we will
rent a van. Your registration fee will be paid by the College, so
it is very important that you are sure you can indeed attend that
Saturday. Please keep this is mind when replying.
In October, 2005, NSAC will be hosting the AAU Teaching Showcase.
NSAC has long been known as a centre of excellent teaching and learning
as well as for our contacts around the region. The AAU Teaching
Showcase is a chance to hear what is working in other institutions,
share ideas and generally strengthen the instructional community
in which we work.
The Instructional Development Committee is the on-campus sponsor
for the showcase, but of course we will require help from the whole
College community to make it a success. To this end, the IDC is
hosting an initial planning session on October 15th, from
12:30 to 2:00 in Cox 262. You are encouraged to bring your
lunch and ideas!
We hope to see as many people as possible, not only instructional
staff, but anyone interested in volunteering to help with running
the conference.

Information Commons
Opened
Dr. Philip Hicks and Mr. Vernon Murray (Class of '54) joined the
MacRae Library in officially opening its Information Commons, Friday,
October 1, 2004 at 3:30 p.m. with the addition of 32 personal computers.
The Information Commons marks the completion of the first phase
of a much larger renovation that will see the 21-year-old facility
evolve into a full-service Learning Commons.
The renovation of the Library for an Information Commons
was a collaborative effort between Alumni, IT services, Library
services and the NSAC Foundation. The Class of '54 generously chose
the Commons as their centennial project with the goal of funding
the chairs. IT Services closed one computer lab in Cox Institute
and moved the computers to the Library and the NSAC Foundation contributed
