June 28, 2004 --- Week 185
Work on Water System to
Disrupt Traffic
As mentioned in our June 14th edition, there will be some traffic
delays for some of us during the summer, due to the Truro Water
Utility being expanded into Bible Hill. NSAC and the contractor
will be communicating daily so everyone is well aware of the construction
schedule, possible disruptions and any schedule changes. The construction
crew typically works 7:00am to 7:00pm but typically wraps up mid-afternoon
on Fridays when possible. The roads affected will be Main Street
and Vimy Road (both under construction now), College Road, a portion
of Pictou Road and a few of the side streets between Pictou and
College. Work on College and Vimy Roads (to the intersection of
College and Vimy) is scheduled to be complete July 9. The work on
College Road will involve tearing up the middle of the lane. It
will be driveable but will remain graveled until the water system
is running and has been tested. We can expect traffic delays, although
the maximum they are able to keep traffic delayed in one direction
is 10 minutes. Project managers suggest planning for a 10-minute
delay on the way to and from NSAC. Access to parking and NSAC roadways
will be interrupted for as short a time as possible. Details will
follow. Project managers will be limiting traffic on College Road
to 'local traffic' as much as possible. Please consider yourselves
'local traffic'. More soon! Feel free to send along specific
questions.
Kids on
the Hill Camps
Bible Hill Recreation, Scotia Pool , and NSAC Athletics

opportunity for summer fun in a learning environment. Activities

July 5, with a new theme weekly. "Kids" can register for
one or multiple weeks. Presently all weeks, except week 5, have
a few spots still open. The camp opens at 8 am daily with pick-up
by 5 pm. For more information call Scotia Pool - 893-6364 or the

National Cont-Ed Association
Welcomes Sarah Macdonald
Sarah Macdonald, Manager
of Continuing Education at NSAC, has been appointed to the National
Executive of the Canadian Association of University Continuing Education
(CAUCE) as the representative for the Atlantic Region. CAUCE
is a professional association of deans, directors, senior administrative
personnel and practitioners who work in university continuing education
in Canada. Sarah is very excited with the news as it is a great
opportunity to raise NSAC’s profile in Canadian continuing
education. In addition to being able to exchange information and
ideas with her peers, Sarah looks forward to contributing to CAUCE’s
mission of extending the scope and quality of educational opportunities
available to adults at Canadian universities. Congratulations, Sarah!
Open House Coming Soon!
What's not to love about Open House 2004? July 29th is shaping
up to be a great day full of learning and excitement. Touch tanks,
interactive tours, fun-filled activities and displays will colour
our campus landscape as we share the sheer level of science and
innovation we practice here at NSAC. Our theme 'Come and be touched
by science' will attract community members, young people, and movers
and shakers in science and technology. Don't miss out on this important
opportunity to raise our stakeholders' awareness of the amazing
work we do here! Opportunities spring from awareness so why not
jump onboard, have some fun, and help NSAC raise its profile! And,
while we are expanding others' minds, we can expand our own bellies
with a staff BBQ at the end of the day. The staff BBQ begins at
4:00 behind Jenkins and runs until 6:00. What a great way to unwind
after a day of showing our wares! More on Open House soon!

West
Nile
Buzzzzzzzz. Yes, it is West Nile Virus season again and we need
to watch out. Although the virus tends to produce mild to no symptoms,
severe cases do occur so it is important to take precautions
against bites. Stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for
mosquitoes so take care to get rid of standing water in your yard.
When going outdoors, guard against bites by wearing bug spray, long
sleeved shirts, pants and a hat. For more information about West
Nile preventives, symptoms and updates visit http://www.gov.ns.ca/health/opmoh/wnile.htm
