July 26, 2004 --- Week 189
Important Notice from
Mailroom
Please be advised that Marilyn
MacLean will be on vacation from July 26 - August 6, 2004, inclusive.
In Marilyn’s absence, Margaret Grant has been hired on a casual
basis. We would ask for your patience as Margaret becomes familiarized
with the Department, campus and staff. In an effort to assist Margaret,
please ensure that all interoffice mail contains the recipient’s
full name, department and office location. Mrs. Grant will also
be filling in for Marilyn for a week in September (15-22, tentatively)
and any other sporadic days throughout the summer.
NSAC Open House Update
Open House 2004 is this Thursday! The ads are running
on radio, on Eastlink's TV Guide channel and in the papers. It's
been promoted in agricultural publications, by direct mail and posters!
To give you an idea of what this year's event looks like, here's
just a few highlights, but there are great activities right across
campus:
- A farm market featuring fresh products from agricultural producers
in Colchester County
- A fish BBQ courtesy of our aquaculture folks
- Garden tours of Alumni Gardens, the Rock Garden and the Butterfly
Garden
- Pasture tours
- Identify-the-Flag game at International
- And many, many other attractions!
Want more details on this year's Open House? You can e-mail Sarah
Morris or go to our Open
House page, or take a look at the Open House 2004 pamphlet
for visitors! We will have yellow balloons to help visitors
find our displays, even those slightly out of view. There will be
lots of signage and we've added a wagon stop at Banting Building
this year. On the same day, NSAC will host a BBQ to thank all of
our Open House exhibitors and volunteers for taking the time to
promote our university to the community. It will be happening behind
Jenkins, between 4:00 and 6:00pm and will feature hot dogs, hamburgers
and salads. We hope to see you there so drop by!
Letting Others Do the
Talking: Enrollment Management Council
Starting last fall, Leanne French-Munn conducted a series of one-on-one
interviews and consultations with numerous groups on campus. The
purpose was to allow for ground-level input into the situation analysis
of NSAC – the good, the bad, and the ‘should-be-improved’.
The process helped us identify our institutional strengths, weaknesses,
and opportunities for improvement and growth. The report, entitled
“Where We Are Now: A Situational Analysis of NSAC”,
was written from the on-campus input provided to Leanne. The report
is now available on our Intranet. Your willingness to share
your knowledge, institutional experience, and your candour has been
essential to the integrity and validity of this situational analysis.
A huge 'thank you' to those who took the time to be involved! As
you read this report, please remember it was based on input solicited
in the fall of 2003. Things are changing at NSAC. In fact, the weaknesses
and opportunities identified by Leanne’s work have already
formed the foundation of Enrollment
Management's on-going actions and recommendations.
Alumnus Named Parliamentary
Secretary
The Hon. Arnold Wayne Easter,
NSAC Class of 1970 (Dipl.T.), was recently named Parliamentary Secretary
to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food with special emphasis
on Rural Development. Wayne was granted a certificate from the Canadian
International Grains Institute in 1973 and for his outstanding commitment
to Canada's farming interests, Mr. Easter was awarded the Canada
125 Medal in 1992. In 1988 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of
Laws by the University of Prince Edward Island.
Dr. Easter is a farmer from Prince Edward Island, elected to the
House of Commons for the first time in 1993. He has served as Parliamentary
