August 30, 2004 --- Week 194
AASTW Coming Soon
The Atlantic Agricultural Science and Technology Workshop (AASTW)
is coming to NSAC on November 17 and 18th! The program will focus
on the theme "Agricultural Innovation – Powering
the Bio-Economy". In addition to plenary sessions,
there will be a number of specialized sessions and workshops on
the topics of (a) environment and sustainable agriculture (b) emerging
agricultural technologies and (c) food quality, safety and health.
There will be a poster session for reports on new research findings
and work in progress. Watch for the Call-for-Posters coming soon.
Industry watchers and experts will be on-hand to share ideas on
the potential of the bio-based economy and Canada's emerging role
as one of the most natural resource-rich countries in the world.
In fact, bioproducts and renewable biomass resources are expected
to account for $100 billion of Canada’s GDP by 2020. This
workshop will bring together leading thinkers in science, technology,
natural resources, and economic development to help set the course
for the region. Specifically, delegates will be discussing Atlantic
Canada’s potential as a source for the biological materials
to be used to produce energy, industrial chemicals, building materials,
foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and raw materials for manufacturing.
If you would like more information on this important event, please
contact AASTW’s Conference Coordinator, Barry
Diamond, or call 902-893-6632. To check out conference details

Open House 2005
After a useful post-mortem meeting on Open House 2004, we are ready
to set a date for Open House 2005. The post-mortem event generated
two strong conclusions: (1) The choice of a Thursday event was a
good one, (2) the actual event needed to be four hours long instead
of three, and (3) the 11:00 start time was more convenient than
10:00. So, Open House 2005 is scheduled for Thursday,
July 28th from 11am until 3pm. It's never
too early to think about this important community event!
Breakfast Television
Coming to NSAC
Breakfast
Television will be doing an on-site shoot on the morning of
Thursday, September 9th to help us build NSAC's profile as a dynamic
applied sciences university with an exciting, fun-loving atmosphere.
The segment will be aired on Friday, September 10th. This is part
of our awareness-building campaign for this year and is intended
to reinforce the messages our markets have been receiving through
our ad campaign. Sarah Morris, with Alumni & Public Relations,
will be in touch with folks around campus to discuss the opportunities
for fantastic science and student life segments. In the meantime,
if you have any great ideas you would like to contribute, just drop
Sarah a line!
