Autumn Assembly 2003 a Huge Success!!!
A total of 260 students at NSAC received
a total of $790,000 in scholarship dollars last week. That represents
35% of the student
body at the institution – better than 1 in 3 students at
NSAC is an award winner.
Autumn Assembly is an opportunity to recognize
our student diversity. Among our scholarship winners are 173 students
from Nova Scotia,
32 from New Brunswick , 19 from Prince Edward Island, 18 from Newfoundland
and Labrador, 6 from other Canada provinces (Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba
and BC) and 10 International students including 5 from India and
others from China, Indonesia, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.
Our winners list included 90 first year students, 53 second
year students, 52 third year students, 31 fourth year students,
29 of our graduate students and 5 graduates from NSAC who are studying
at the University of Guelph and UPEI this fall.
Alumni Weekend a Great Time
The annual Homecoming, Alumni Weekend
was a big success this past friday and Saturday. Grads from 1938
on came to get together,
talk about the NSAC as it once was and hear about what is currently
going on. There was a near record turn out for the Alumni Breakfast
at the library. The Class of 1952 presented NSAC with a caved version
of the logo in memory of Dr. MacRae and Jenny McInnes gave an excellent
talk on the relationship of NSAC to the NS Woman's Institute. There
were class reunions and other special events. About 50 people enjoyed
the lunch and annual meeting of the NSAC Alumni Association. The
Class of '53 won the shield for the highest percentage of class
to attend (40%) and John Rogers from class of '73 for traveling
the furthest (Spencerport, New York). Thanks to all the volunteers
for pitching in to make the weekend memorable for the grads.
Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame Induction
Held in Alumni Theatre
The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame held it annual
induction ceremony in Alumni Theatre on October 22nd. This was
the first time the event had been held there since it beginning
in 1968. The reaction to the change was positive as it added to
the formal feeling of the event.
The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame has always
had a close connection to NSAC. The photos of the Inductees hang
in Cumming Hall and the organization of the event has traditionally
been done on campus by volunteers with the Department of Agriculture.
Since 2000, the organization for the Hall has been done by the
staff of the Development and External Relations office. Many of
the inductees
are grads
of NSAC and the induction event is an excellent opportunity to
network with the major players in Atlantic Agriculture.

News from the Road
It’s been another busy few weeks for NSAC’s recruitment
team. Two weeks ago Brian Carruthers visited schools in Cumberland
County, including CEC and South Colchester. NSAC received great
interest from both of these schools, and many students are interested
in taking advantage of our ‘1st Year at Home’ program.
This program allows students interested in arts or science to take
a basic first year program that upon completion can be either transferred
to another institution or applied to degree studies right here.
Meanwhile, Craig spent the week in St. John’s, NL and brought
home a large number of information requests. Despite heavy rainstorms
and washed out roadways, last week saw Brian traversing the highways
and byways of Newfoundland, while Craig traveled the Bridgewater
and South Shore areas of Nova Scotia. Both recruiters have seen
varying levels of interest in the high schools, and we hope to
see many of the interested students at NSAC this Fall for campus
visits. Speaking of campus visits, last week saw three students
attend campus tours to find out more about what NSAC has to offer.
We’d like to thank Ali Madani and Peter Havard for their
attendance and contribution to the Parent Night at CEC, and to
Susan Michel for her help at CEC’s morning information session.
Engineering Openhouse Planned
Engineering will have their annual Open House on Wednesday, Nov.
5, 6 -9 p.m.
They are having displays by current students, grad students
research projects, faculty research projects, several engineering
activities of the Resource Stewardship Branch (NSDAF), career and
awards office, industry booths (APENS, Horner Assoc., Nova Scotia
Power, John Deere, etc.), interactive physics lab display, and
much more. It promises to be a very informative and exciting event
for potential students. A poster
is available at for viewing. Please encourage people to attend.
New Education Website Announced
The Canadian Education
Association launched its new Website on October 17th including
Focus on ICT. We are hoping that this new resource will serve as
a forum for Canadians interested in formal education and lifelong
learning to connect with one another. In order to make this possible,
we would like to invite you to contact your members and friends
and let them know that our new Website is now accessible and that
we are ready to receive their comments and suggestions on what
we are presenting. We would also like to invite all members of
the Canadian education community to send us information concerning
their education-related events so that we can post it for FREE
on our new Website.
CEA is really excited about its new accomplishment, and we’re
looking forward to posting your events on what we’re hoping
will become a virtual meeting place for the Canadian education
community.
