June 2, 2003 - Week 134
Research in Ghana
Mary Breen has been awarded a CIDA scholarship for Innovative Research
to undertake research in Ghana for a thesis that will form part
of an MA in International Development Studies from Dalhousie University.
The title of her research project is "A gendered analysis of
the socio-economic impact of food-related technologies on livelihoods
in northern Ghana". The project will examine changes in livelihoods
that emanate from the introduction of new technologies. While economic
and environmental impacts of technology tend to be well-documented,
the socio-cultural impacts are often ignored, including the differentiated
impacts based on gender, age, status and ethnicity. Mary will travel
to Ghana this summer to undertake the research. The scholarship
is valued at $14,500.
News from the Road
University Day which was held on Friday, May 30th was a complete
success. Thank-you to all the faculty, staff and students who helped
make this day run smoothly. There were a total of 115 students on
campus along with their families.
The day started out with rain which meant lunch was held indoors.
A very special thanks to Ryan McCarron, Jenn Herbin, and Shelly
Juurlink who performed a Woodsmen Demonstration before lunch to
entertain the guests and to Mila MacLean who presented a student
testimonial on student life. She worked very hard on a slideshow
presentation but was unable to use it because of technical difficulties.
After lunch, the students went on an hour long "Talks and Tour"
of the program that they were interested in.
The Athletic Centre was the site for an Expo with all of the NSAC
programs and services, and a representative from the Royal Bank
to answer questions about student loans. A special thanks to Kevin
McDavid who was the DJ during the expo and to Ian Dionne who took
on role of Rocky the Ram, the NSAC Mascot. Also during the expo,
students were able to register for their fall semester courses which
turned out to be quite worthwhile since the telephone registration
system is no longer in place.
There was a parent information session with guest speakers Wayne
Paquet, speaking on behalf of the Registry, Judy Smith, Student
Services, and Elaine Rector, Campus Safety and Security.
This week there will be four international guests on campus touring
programs and facilities. Also a girl from Newfoundland will come
to have a tour of the Pre-vet program.
