Canada As Trade Bully: Canada's position at the WTO agricultural
trade negotiations
Canada's WTO negotiating position primarily serves the needs of
Canadian farmers for new markets, and ignores the special needs
of 2.5 billion farming people in developing countries. A level playing
field is not necessarily a fair playing field.
Presenter: Dr. Andrew Kernohan
Dr. Kernohan is a beef and grain farmer from Parrsboro who is
filling in this winter as Acting Canadian Programme Officer for
Oxfam Canada in Halifax.
Room C 261, Cox Building, NSAC
12:30 - 1:30 pm, Thurs. Feb 6, 2003

All are Welcome!
International Student's Association
The International Students' Association proceeds this term in giving
students, staff and the public an opportunity to learn about a country
presented by a student (or students) from that particular
country. As before, we will be offering a presentation last Wednesday
of each month this winter semester. This coming Wednesday, January
29th, the two Sudanese students on campus,
joined by Erin Bourgeois, the WUSC (World University Service of
Canada) student representative on campus, will give a presentation
on their country and the WUSC organization.
Again, Chartwell's will offer samples of some traditional dishes
from Sudan and East Africa, selected by the students themselves.
Students who live on campus have a selection of Canadian or a
traditional Sudanese dish, while off-campus students, staff and
visitors may purchase the Sudanese dish for $9.00 (tax included)
between the hours of 4:30 - 6:00 pm, at the day of the
presentation.
The presentation is free of charge and starts at 6.00 pm and will
be held in Cox Institute, Room 257.
I encourage everyone to join us when Paul Manyok Chuol (current
WUSC student) and James Wani (former WUSC student) talk about the
largest country of the diverse Africa, it's history, culture
and nature. There is more to Sudan then the ongoing civil war!

Founder's Day - Klinck Lecture
The profession of agrology has realized great accomplishments over
the past century and is currently facing a world of rapid change.
Our organizations are being challenged to cope with radical shifts
in direction. We have much to celebrate and an interesting future
to consider. Where are we going and how do we prepare?
It is our pleasure to invite you to join us for a soup and sandwich
lunch and a seminar by Dr. Ed Tyrchniewicz, President of AIC on
Friday, February 14th, 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. in the Riverview
Room, Jenkins Hall at NSAC. Dr. Tyrchniewicz will speak about "Agrology:
Proud Past and Promising Future."
This event is sponsored jointly by the Nova Scotia Agricultural
College and the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrologists to celebrate
the 98th Anniversary of NSAC and as a Klinck professional enrichment
for agrologists under the Klinck lecture program of the AIC Foundation.
We look forward to having you with us.
Please RSVP to Theresa Blois at 893-6720 or by E-Mail at tblois@nsac.ns.ca
News from the Road
Dara and Brian were back on the road last week to revisit some schools
and speak with some interested students on a more individual basis.
Brian visited a number of High Schools in
Antigonish, Rural Cape Breton and Sydney while Dara visited some
schools in Halifax County and the South Shore. Revisiting these
schools allows prospective students to talk to the NSAC representatives
on more of an individual basis and answer any specific questions
that they may have. Jenna was in the office all week.
This coming week, we have Roger Hill, the Guidance Counsellor from
Richmond Academy coming for a tour of the campus. Mr. Hill likes
to be up to date with the programs that the college has to offer.
We will be hosting him for lunch and have invited some Richmond
Academy alumni to join us to speak on their NSAC experiences.
Dara will be heading for Fredricton to visit some high schools
and will be attending the New Brunswick Agriculture Producers Association
Meeting in Fredricton. Brian will be taking part in the Agricultural
Awareness and Commodity Meetings in Halifax and will then be attending
the Prince Edward Island Federation of Agriculture Meeting in Charlottetown.
Brian will also speak at a 4-H Conference in Truro about some possible
agricultural careers and what programs NSAC has to offer. Jenna
will remain in the office coordinating events that the recruitment
staff will be participating in during the upcoming weeks.
Call for Nominations
It is time, once again, to call for nominations for our Honours
and Awards Program, including Honourary Doctorate, Honourary Associate
and Professor or Administrator Emeritus. On behalf of the Honours
and Awards Committee, I now invite your nominations. The guidelines
for these awards are available from Professor Jeff Hoyle,
jhoyle@nsac.ns.ca or from Theresa Blois, tblois@nsac.ns.ca
There are deadlines associated with these nominations as
follows:
Honourary Doctorate: February 10 for Autumn Assembly
October 1st for Convocation 2004
Honourary Associate: June 1st for Autumn Assembly
December 1st for Convocation 2004
Professor/Administrator Emeritus: May 15 for Autumn Assembly
January 1st for Convocation 2004
With the passing of Dr. Herb MacRae last June, we no longer have
a Principal Emeritus. There is certainly no compulsion to appoint
anyone to that position, but the opportunity is there.
The Honours and Awards Committee will be meeting around mid-February
to consider nominations for the Honourary Doctorate, and to prepare
recommendations on candidates, if there are any, to Faculty Council
and then, potentially to the Dalhousie Senate.
