April 7th , 2003 - Week 128
News From the Road
The Recruitment team has been quite busy in the office this past
week. Fifty Grade 3 students from Stewiacke came to the campus to
learn about the fish and the sheep that we have on campus. One of
the students couldn't get over the fact that Gary Wallace named
a sheep after him (Brendan). Tuesday, April 8th, we have 18 students
coming from North Colchester High School to learn about Tissue Culture
and Protein Fingerprinting.
Friday April 11th, there will be a University Day Meeting
at 10:00 in Room 257. This is for faculty, staff, and students who
are interested in helping. If you would like to hear about what
we are planning for University Day, please feel free to drop by
the meeting.
This week's "Tip of the Hat" goes out to Gary Wallace
and Paul MacIsaac for once again helping us out with the tour that
came in last week. Also we would like to thank Sherry Matheson,
Dr. Hai Choo Smith and Dr. Robin Robinson for the tour of their
labs.
Climate Adaptation and Greenhouse Mitigation
in Agriculture
The Nova Scotia Agricultural College is hosting a two-day workshop
on Climate Adaptation and Greenhouse Mitigation in Agriculture on
April 14 and 15, 2003 in the CA Douglas Room, Cumming Hall, NSAC
campus. The purpose of this workshop is to bring producers and scientists
together to discuss the issues and opportunities that these two
related topics present for agriculture in the Atlantic Region.
The first day of the workshop will focus on the Climate Change
issue and the adaptation to climate change in the agriculture sector
of Atlantic Canada. The second day of the workshop will focus on
the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and
current beneficial management practice (BMP) demonstration programs
being delivered in the region.
Support for this workshop was received from the Nova Scotia Soil
and Crop Improvement Association, Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture,
Nova Scotia Agricultural College and BIOCAP Canada Foundation. For
more information and a copy of the program contact David Burton
at (902) 893- 6250 or dburton@nsac.ns.ca
ACS and IT-RCSU Merger
As you may know, Academic Computing Services (ACS) is now being
managed by the IT-Resources Corporate Service Unit. All ACS staff
remain NSAC employees and continue to carry out ACS mandated tasks.
Within the next two weeks a consultant will be hired to conduct
a review of ACS and its current service delivery format. As part
of the review, input will be sought from faculty and students as
well as current ACS staff and the College Executive. Any future
changes to ACS's service delivery will be based on recommendations
that will be put forward by the consultant and approved by College
Executive.
Preliminary discussion and the scope and mandate of the review
has yet to be determined. For further information on this review
contact Bernie MacDonald, VP Administration at (902) 893- 6719 or
by e-mail at bmacdonald@nsac.ns.ca

the country, 12 of which can be found in the Atlantic provinces.
An Academic All Canadian Award recognizes student-athletes who
have achieved an honors standing combined with excellence in college
athletics. Award winners at NSAC have been named to an All-Conference
Team and achieved honors, (75 per cent) or high honors (80 per cent).
NSAC recipients are Nathan Bokma, Shubenacadie, Men's Basketball;
Lindsay MacCormack, Sydney, Women's Basketball; Emily Fraser, Dartmouth
and Maria Didkowsky, Kennetcook, Women's Soccer. Emily and Maria
are both recipients of the prestigious Atlantic Scholars awards
including full tuition and residence. Maria will graduate in May
and has received a postgraduate scholarship from the Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), valued at $17,300
per year for a maximum of 24 months to pursue her Masters studies.

scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and to seek out the
best research mentors in their chosen fields.
Recipients were Maria Didkowsky, Nathan Fahey, Robert Kinley, Angela
Murray, Rebekah Nason
and Erin Smith.
NSERC Student Research Awards given at
NSAC
Nine NSAC students have been awarded Undergraduate Student Research
Awards from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
(NSERC) for the summer of 2003.
The awards, valued at $4500 each, are intended to stimulate an
interest in research in the natural sciences or engineering as well
as encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a
research career in these fields.
The awards are applied over four months and typically employ students
throughout the summer. The recipients must have maintained a cumulative
average of at least a B or 70 per cent over their past years of
study.
The students are supervised by NSERC research grant holders. Supervisors
supplement the value of the student's award as well as provide the
student with direction, facilities and resources for the research
project.
The winners are: Tracy Collins, Kippens, NL; Renee Garbes, Truro,
NS; Shawn Llewellyn, Truro, NS; Rebekah Nason, Tracy, NB; Trudy
