Dr. Nabil Rifai Awarded Slovakian Medal
Dr. Nabil Rifai was recently honored for his interaction with international
students. In recognition of his continuing efforts to promoted co-operation
between Canada and the Slovak republic, Dr. Nabil Rifai was awarded
the Slovak Presidential certificate from Rudolf Schuster, president
of the Slovak Republic.
Rifai and six visiting students from Slovakia recently gathered
in Halifax to celebrate the students who arrived in Canada. Schuster
also attended the special gathering and unveiled the Slovak commemorative
plaque, a reminder of the many Slovak immigrants who came through
the Halifax port and established for themselves and their children
a new home in this country.
Opportunity Knocks

The 7th Annual Dalhousie Conference on Teaching and Learning: "Preserving
and Adapting Core Values in the Contemporary University" to
be held May 7th - 9th, 2003.
If you are an adjunct faculty or graduate student you can attend

The Instructional Development Committee is arranging registration
and transportation for each of the three days. If you are interested

Flags at Half Mast
The Flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa and on all Government of Canada
buildings and establishments across Canada will be flown at half
mast from sunrise to sunset Monday, April 28th, 2003 to mark a day
of mourning for persons killed or injured in the workplace.
Stay in School Presentations
NSAC was approached by the Junior Achievers of Halifax to volunteer
for Stay in School presentations taking place with various Grade
Nine classes in Brookfield and Truro. Several NSAC students and
a staff member participated in the workshop, including: Karla Barnhill,
Emily Nicks, Cheryl Watson, Jessica Malone, Andrea Munroe and Debbie
Mellish. Thank you for your cooperation and your efforts. This will
look good on your resume!!
Pasture Workshop for Farmers
A pasture workshop for Farmers will be held in the Ruminant Animal
Centre on the NSAC campus Saturday, May 31, 2003. Cost is $25 including
a barbecued roast beef lunch. Featured speakers include Dr. Bruce
Coulman - AAFC Saskatoon and Dr. Tapani Kunelius - AAFC, Charlottetown.
Together they have more than 50 years research experience with forages
in Eastern Canada. The workshop will include walks through various
types of pastures on campus as well as classroom presentations and
discussions. Topics will include pasture strategies during drought.
Organized by the Atlantic Pasture Research Group and NSAC. Contact

Convocation Update
Plans are well underway for Convocation ceremonies and celebrations
taking place Thursday, May 1, and Friday May 2nd, 2003. Tickets
are still available for the Graduation Banquet being held at the
Keddy's Convention Centre beginning at 6:30 p.m. Guest speaker this
year will be Kent Loughead. Tickets can be purchased through the
Student Union office or by calling Pat Jeffcock at 6298.
The Baccalaureate and Candle lighting ceremony is scheduled for
5:30 p.m. in Alumni Theatre with a tree planting ceremony to follow.
The Class of 2003 Gift to the College is a Pyramidal Blue Spruce
to be planted in the east end of the Rock Garden in the dwarf conifer
collection.
Convocation ceremonies get underway at 2:00 p.m. in the Langille
Athletic Centre on Friday, May 2, 2003. An Honorary Associate will
be presented to Mr. Bernard Jackson and guest speaker will be Dr.
Philip Hicks, the new President of NSAC. All faculty and staff are
encouraged to attend and support the Class of 2003. For more information
