NSAC Students Place Second at Atlantic Engineering Competition Three NSAC engineering students placed second at the Annual Atlantic Engineering Competition (AEC) in Moncton, New Brunswick on February 5th - 7th, 1999 earning them an opportunity to compete in the Canadian Engineering Competition in Montreal in March. Andrew Sinclair, David Weatherhead and Tim Crowtz placed second of 18 teams in Impromptu Team Design at the AEC, a student-organized event that brings some of Atlantic Canada's finest engineering students together to compete in six categories. Impromptu Team Design demanded each team design and build an object able to travel two wires, 12 inches apart and 23 feet in length at a 40 degree angle. The object would then meet a vertical board, at which point a marble must be launched at a target 14 feet away. Students were given five hours and a mock budget of $20,000 to complete the task and were required to defend their design orally and manually. They were judged on creativity, viability of the design, budgeting and whether the objective was met. Distinguished professionals from the academic and industrial sectors judged all categories. All ten NSAC students, sponsored by the NSAC Engineering Society and the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, fared well at the competition. Other schools in attendance included Acadia, Dalhousie, DalTech, Saint Mary's, U de M, University College of Cape Breton and the University of New Brunswick.
