Farm Equipment Mechanic

More Than Just Changing Tires...

Doug Burris, Middle Musquodoboit, was recently selected by the Apprenticeship Board of Nova Scotia to represent the province at a four day workshop in Toronto to advance the standards of the Farm Equipment Mechanic trade.

Sponsored by the Federal government, industry reps from across Canada participated in providing input and analysis in the development of interprovincial standards for the Trade. Doug, a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, has been the instructor of the Farm Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship program at the College since 1991.

"Every 5 years as trends change, new analysis is required," explained Doug. "A document is published and approved by the various provinces and becomes the basis for the interprovincial exam. It helps to develop standards across the country."

The Farm Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship program, the only program of its kind in the Maritimes, is a modular program of intense theory five weeks a year for four years and involves the completion of 8000 hours of supervised on-the-job work experience.

The next program will run February 22nd - March 26th , 1999. For more information contact the Department of Continuing & Distance education at (902) 893-6666
