NSAC student focused on making a difference
A chance encounter with the SPCA sparked a passion for animals that has led Ashley Hawkin to Nova Scotia Agricultural College and a career in veterinary medicine.
“Before I came to NSAC, I volunteered with and fostered kittens for the Fredericton SPCA. I came to NSAC for the veterinary technology program in September 2010 and I can't emphasize enough that this is the field I need to be in,” Ashley explained. “Veterinary medicine can be rigorous and demanding, both psychologically and physically and if you let it, it will change your life.”
Ashley, a second year Veterinary Technology student from Kingston, N.S., is one example of an NSAC student focused on making a difference. She is among 38 per cent of the student body that will be honored during the 2011 NSAC Scholarship Banquet, Thursday, November 3 with the presentation of $1 million in scholarships and bursaries to deserving students.
“I believe that strong communities require humane principles and warm hearts. I aspire to teach by example, to make lives better and of course, to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves,” she added. Ashley holds a Bachelor of Arts from St. Thomas University with a major in History and minor in Political Science. Ashley will receive the $1,000 Robert Parent Memorial Scholarship
“We are very proud of our students,” said NSAC Co-President and Vice President Academic Dr. Leslie MacLaren. “Their leadership in academics, in university life and in our stakeholder communities is a big part of what makes NSAC the great place to work and learn that it is. I’m so glad that we are able to acknowledge that leadership through our scholarships and bursary programs”
Guest speaker for the evening is Mr. Jim Goit. Jim has spent the entire 35 years of his working life in the service of agriculture in Nova Scotia.
Relationships with people have always been at the heart of any work that Jim has had over the years. From his early days as an extension specialist, through his time in management and administration, it has always been the people around Jim that were important. The planning and team work have always come first.
This carried through to his community involvement. As a member of the Rotary Club of Truro, since 2005, Jim has been very active in helping one of the oldest service groups in the town modernize and implement plans to continue to give back to the community of which it is a part. He is currently President of the Club.
“Our scholarship sponsors make this evening possible. As benefactors – and often in the dual role as NSAC alumni - they model the responsible and compassionate citizens we want our graduates to become. It is important to help students like Ashley pursue excellence - and their passions - to make a difference,” added MacLaren.
NSAC is a specialized university that cultivates learning and research, focusing on improving and sustaining our environment for the health and well-being of society.
