NSAC to host
inaugural Atlantic Canada Water Symposium March 26-27
Water quality and human health will be the main focus of NSAC’s
inaugural Atlantic Canada WATER Symposium and Planning Forum
to be held on the university’s campus in association
with World Water Day, March 26-27th, 2010.
“
The purpose of the symposium and forum is to bring together
some of the leading scholars and practitioners of watershed
management from across Atlantic Canada for the first of what
is hoped to be a series of ongoing annual meetings,” explained
Dr. Robert France, Watershed Management Chair at NSAC. “We
hope to expose participants to new developments in the field
and discuss and exchange ideas and concerns related to watershed
management in the region,” he added.
Water is vital to people’s health and livelihoods. Canada’s
freshwater faces crises including contamination, shortages
and pressure to export to the United States. In fact, only
one per cent of Canada’s fresh water is renewable and
there is no national strategy to address urgent water issues.
Keynote speaker of the workshop is Harvard-educated research
scientist, Timothy Ford, Vice President of Research & Dean
of Graduate Studies at the University of New England in Maine.
Dr. Ford received his Ph.D. in Aquatic Microbiology from the
University College of North Wales. He is currently department
head of Microbiology at Montana State University. He also retains
an adjunct appointment at the Harvard School of Public Health
where he was an Associate Professor of Environmental Microbiology
and Director of the Program in Water and Health.
