Grow Your
Own…
An NSAC Summer Workshop Series
Eating real food and choosing local products are two simple
but effective ways to support healthy, sustainable communities.
Another is to start on your own food production journey by
growing your own.
NSAC is offering a series of hands-on, practical workshops
to teach the science behind the food production journey – from
soil to plate - beginning in June.
“At a time when we worry about our vulnerability in
being reliant on food from far away, what could be a more positive
response than to grow food for ourselves on our own properties
and our own community gardens?” explained Dr. Tarjei
Tennessen, head, department of Plant and Animal Sciences. “At
NSAC, we can show you how to manage the green urban garden
and how to make best use of it for your own personal, extremely
local food production.”
In June, two one-day workshops will be offered on soils and
composting, including soil types, soil health, making compost
and planning a garden. Other workshops in the series will be
offered throughout the summer on Weeds, Tools and Pests and
Preserving your Bounty.
”We are pleased to be able to offer these workshops
to those interested in producing some of their own food,” said
Continuing and Distance Education Program Manager Tracy Kittilsen.
“The information will give participants an understanding of the principles
and practices of producing food that is not only local, but safe for themselves
and the environment.”
The Centre for Continuing & Distance Education at NSAC
delivers lifelong learning opportunities to assist in the achievement
of the personal and professional goals of its learners. What
better place to reconnect with your environment than at NSAC.
