of the agricultural industry in the region. Each year,

Helping to Heal the Ozone Layer
September 16th marked the 20th anniversary
of the signing of the Montreal Protocol, the landmark
international treaty to protect the stratospheric
ozone layer. To date, 191 countries have signed
the Protocol, which prompts countries to phase out
the production and consumption of ozone depleting
chemicals.

2007 Atlantic Scholars Award Recipients Named
For the 2007 2008 year, there are eight recipients
from across the Atlantic Provinces receiving Atlantic
Scholars Awards from NSAC.
The Atlantic Scholars Awards are the most prestigious
entrance scholarships awarded by NSAC. They have
a value this year of $9,280 with a potential value

NSAC students receive recognition at scholarship
luncheon
Nine undergraduate students were honoured at a
scholarship luncheon at Nova Scotia Agricultural
College (NSAC) on Friday. The students were awarded
prestigious Natural Science and Engineering Research
Council (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Awards
(USRAs). These scholarships provide undergraduate
students with the opportunity to work on a research
project in the natural sciences and engineering
for 16 weeks.

Dr. Rob Gordon named Director of Research at
NSAC
(Bible Hill, NS) - Dr. Leslie MacLaren, Vice-President
Academic, is pleased to announce the appointment
of Dr. Rob Gordon as Director of Research at Nova
Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC). Dr. Gordon is
an Associate professor and recent Canada Research
Chair with the Department of Engineering. He has
been Interim Director of Research at NSAC for the
past year.

Graduating Green Thumbs
Bible Hill--Seven students will be graduating
from Nova Scotia Agricultural College's (NSAC) unique
Master Gardener Training Program on Friday, July
13, 2007 at 4:30 pm in Alumni Hall.
“This program really helps hobby gardeners
‘tune up’ their gardening skills by
working with professional horticulturists at NSAC,”
says Bill Thom, one of the students graduating on
July 13.

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, President of the Pugwash
Conferences on Science and World Affairs and a renowned
agricultural scientist, will visit the NSAC campus
on Tuesday, July 10 and deliver a lecture titled
"From Green to an Evergreen Revolution."

Carol Goodwin, an Associate Professor in the Department
of Environmental Sciences at NSAC, has recently
returned from her 14th annual trip to Writtle College
in Chelmsford, Essex, England. Carol created a three-week
long NSAC credit course titled the “British
Garden” in 1994 and has traveled to Writtle
College with NSAC and Finnish students every May
since.

Nova Scotia Agricultural College freezes Tuition
Bible Hill–There will be no increase in tuition
at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College for the
2007-2008 academic year. In addition, Nova Scotia
students enrolled in full time degree level studies
will see tuition reduced by a further $500.

Bible Hill-- The Atlantic Poultry Research Centre

will officially open its doors today, Wednesday,

shellfish industry as alternative feed ingredient
for laying hens.

the secret to obtaining a good quality egg shell

NSAC graduate student explores alternatives
to antibiotic use in livestock production
Bible Hill--Today’s consumer is becoming
increasingly more aware of the “from the farm
to your plate” process. The emergence of antibiotic
resistant bacteria and the potential risk of chemical
residues in food have caused increased public pressure
to reduce the use of feed-added antibiotics and
chemical additives in livestock production.

NSAC is pleased to announce that Andrew Nikiforuk
will be guest speaker for this week’s Friday
at 3 seminar.
Mr. Nikiforuk is a well-known Canadian investigative
journalist who has written about education, economics
and the environment for the last two decades.
His work has appeared in Saturday Night,

NSAC Graduate Student is recipient of ECO Canada
Student Award 2007
Bible Hill, NS-- Julie Bailey, a graduate student
at Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC), has
been selected for one of 15 Environmental Careers
Organization (ECO) Canada Student Awards. Julie
was selected for one of two awards for the Atlantic
Region and will receive a $1,000 prize and the opportunity
to showcase her poster at Americana 2007 (www.americana.org),
a biennial conference on environmental business

Developing Rural Entrepreneurs
Ghana's First Master Educators and Educators in
Entrepreneurship awarded Certificates from NSAC
Bible Hill--Twenty-five Entrepreneurship Educators
and five Master Educators in Entrepreneurship received
certificates of achievement from NSAC at an awards
gala at Tamale Polytechnic in northern Ghana on
February 19, 2007. Most of those receiving awards
are instructors at Wa, Bolgatanga and Tamale Polytechnics,
NSAC’s partner institutions in the Developing
Rural Entrepreneurs (DRE) project. They will soon
be teaching newly accredited tertiary and non-tertiary
entrepreneurship courses at their institutions in

NSAC Graduate to address Engineering Class
As part of National Engineering Week, the Department
of Engineering welcomes guest speaker, Oliver Browning,
a Civil and Structural Engineer within Horner Associates
Limited.
Mr. Browning, an NSAC Alumnus, will be back on campus
on Friday, March 2nd to address the first and second
year Engineering Diploma students.
His talk will begin at 1:00 pm in Room 43 of the

NSAC President’s List Posted
Students honoured for academic achievement
Bible Hill–Seventy-one students will be honoured
for high academic standing February 7th,
2007 by being named to the President’s
List at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Students
on the President’s List are within the top
ten per cent in their program and maintain an average
of 80 per cent or higher.
“I look forward to this event every year,”said
NSAC President T. Philip Hicks. “These are
our best and brightest and I am thrilled to honour
them with this recognition.”
In recognition of their achievement, students will
attend an evening reception in Alumni Hall in Cumming
Hall with guest speaker and former NSAC student,

Bible Hill--Soon the carrot industry will have
a new tool for the field – located on the
hard drive of a computer.
The Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) is
pleased to announce the creation of a new project
in Agroinformatics. The project, being led by Dr.
Raj Lada with the Department of Plant and Animal
Sciences, intends to develop a computer modeling
