WorldCat FAQ
1. What is WorldCat Local?
WorldCat Local is a search tool that allows you to search
many libraries at once for an item and also search your
local library (NSAC). It does not replace our traditional
search tools such as the Novanet
Catalogue, articles
and research databases and Resolver
(our journal search tool).
2. What can WorldCat Local do?
- Search NSAC, as well as Novanet libraries and many
other libraries worldwide to locate items such
as books, journals, government documents, links to electronic
books, electronic journals and much more!
- Place an interlibrary loan or Novanet Express to obtain
items not available at NSAC,
- Link to the "Ask
a Librarian" service at NSAC,
- Build lists of library materials you can share with
others,
- Chagne the language interface option, you can have English,
Dutch, Chinese, French, German or Spanish. Look for the
option at the bottom of each WorldCat Local page.
- Email, print and export citations,
- Refine your search by format, author, year, content,
audience, language and topic,
- And much more!
3. Use WorldCat Local when you want:
- A user friendly interface,
- To see cover art of preview an item,
- To create a personal account to create and share lists
and more,
- To change the language of the interface,
- Suggestions for searching such as "did you mean?"
- Relevancy ranking,
- To find items Worldwide as well as at NSAC and the Novanet
libraries.
4. When should you NOT use WorldCat Local?
- When you want to find Reserve items (use Novanet
instead),
- When you want to search by call number (use Novanet
instead),
- When you want to search for journal articles (use our
article
and research databases instead)
- When you want to search for specialized collections
such as digital archives,
- When you want to see your library account (you can link
to Novanet
from WorldCat).
