Howard Borden Fuller

Howard Borden Fuller was born July 7, 1922 in Port Williams. He attended schools in Grand Pré and Wolfville, where following graduation, he returned to work on the family farm.

In 1956 Howard married Barbara Saunders and together, they changed the mixed farm to a specialized enterprise of egg production and fruit trees. Later the farm switched to broiler chicken production with continuation of the orchards. Over the years, Howard's focus was solely on the orchards, while one of his sons took over the broiler operation.

Howard Fuller was committed to the interests and well-being of the agricultural industry. He served as President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, Director and Executive Member of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, President of the Chicken Farmers of Nova Scotia and President of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association.

As a community leader, Howard served on various boards and committees including Kings Mutual Insurance Company, Maritime Tel and Tel, Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital Corporation and Grand Pré-Hortonville Heritage Committee.

In 1966, the chicken industry in Nova Scotia was well established with seventy-one producers, Howard being one of them. Yet, the supply of chicken related to demand was in chaos. Howard saw the potential of the chicken industry but realized it could not continue unless some sense of order was established and the grower receive a fair return for investment. Howard Fuller's efforts, with four other producers, resulted in the establishment of the Nova Scotia Chicken Marketing Board in 1966. This laid the foundation for the industry today.

In 1989, Howard became a director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Grower's Association and served as President in 1993. During his time on the Board, Howard was a tireless promoter of apples and the Association. Howard seldom went to any meeting with which he had responsibilities, without a bag of apples. Often, he gave away his Nova Scotia Fruit Growers lapel pin, thinking the gesture more meaningful for the receiver. No one who met Howard left empty handed, receiving lapel pins, little golden apple pins, or pocket calendar - Howard's Calendar Cards.

Nominated by the Chicken Farmers of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Turkey Producers' Marketing Board, the late Howard Borden Fuller is well deserving of the honour as Inductee into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.
