William Aubrey Ellsworth
Newfoundland and Labrador
Born in Meadows Newfoundland in 1932, William Aubrey Ellsworth started
his ventures in Agriculture in 1954. It was in June of that year that
he purchased his first Ayrshire animal from Hammond Farms, while still
working at Lundrigans Construction Ltd. He continued to work full time
and start a dairy industry. Each morning he would deliver his milk, by
can, to Brookfield and Central Dairies in Corner Brook on his way to work.
He continued to do this until he gave up his position and went into farming
on a full time basis. Farming has been his main objective since that time.
In 1956 he was registered under the Humberview prefix with his first
tattoo number of MNM 1M. His registration has since then come full circle.
He recently tattooed a young calf with that exact tattoo number, 46 years
later.
Aubrey's breeding stands for itself. In 1975 he received a Gold Seal
Certificate for Humberview Mary. In 1979 he received the Superior Breeders
Award and has bred 3 cows to rate Excellent, as well as many more down
the line. In 1990 he received All Time All Canadian Production with Humberview
Tulip and in 1997 he received the 12000 kg Milk Producer Award. These
awards has been a great source of pride and satisfaction.
Aubrey's involvement in farming and agriculture has not only involved
his milking and cows. He has been an active member in the Agriculture
circle for many years. He is member of the Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland
and Labrador, a member of the Federation of Agriculture, a member of Ayrshire
Canada and for a number of years he was Director and President of Wesco
Dairy and Poultry Producers Co-op up until 1993 when this company was
taken over by Brookfields.
As well as being a distinguished member of the Agriculture world, he
is also devoted to the promotion of Agriculture as a whole. He has competed
in various local and provincial fairs, winning various awards and classes
as well as Grand Champion. As well, he has participated in provincial
Exhibition in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. At that time he won
Senior Yearling class with Humberview Wendy.
In addition to participating in, Aubrey has also been asked to judge
various events, from local 4-H competitions to major Maritime shows such
as the Maritime Winter Fair, the Prince Edward Island Provincial Exhibition
and the Atlantic Winter Fair.
Aubrey has not always had it easy in his career, He started out with
one cow and built a future. He made a living in the beginning with very
little, cleared a farm on a small acreage of land and when his operation
outgrew this facility, he started over and began a new farm in another
location. Starting over took a lot of sweat and hard work. Aubrey, his
wife Mabel and their five children have a lot to be proud of.
Nominated by the Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador in recognition
of his tremendous contributions to agriculture, it is fitting that the
Aubrey Ellsworth become an Inductee into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall
of Fame.
