Manning K. Ells

Nova Scotia

There is something unusually admirable about the lives of men which, rooted in the soil, are devoted to the pursuits of the land in an intelligently constructive way. Their names and their deeds become known far beyond the borders of their own communities for they exemplify and stand for the wholesome things of this existence.

Such a man was the late Manning K. Ells, who lived a life of well ordered and recognized accomplishment; in many fields of agricultural and community endeavour in his native Nova Scotia. However, it is for the leadership and enthusiasm he generated within the Canadian poultry industry that he will be remembered not only in Atlantic Canada but in poultry circles throughout; the North American Continent.

Mr. Ells was an intensely enthusiastic promoter of the poultry industry, with his promotion, basically, taking the form of producing chicks of high quality; through the distribution of information which encouraged people to produce eggs; and, though not generally known, through providing financial support; to many who, without; his help, would have been unable to enter into the industry.

As the Ells enterprise expanded and developed, so, also, did the poultry industry in Nova Scotia now recognized as a multi-million dollar enterprise of major economic importance in the provincial economy.

Manning Ells is credited with having accomplished more to place the poultry industry in the premiere position it held during his lifetime than any other individual.
