Dr. Donald L. Craig

Dr. Donald L. Craig, Kentville, King's County, has made a lifetime commitment
to the horticulture and ornamental crop production industries in Eastern
Canada.
As a Research Scientist with Agriculture Canada and in private industry,
his development of eight strawberry, two raspberry, nine rhododendron,
three azalea varieties and tissue culture technology, earned him recognition
locally and amongst the scientific communities.
Dr. Craig's development of virus free strawberry plants led to the establishment
of a certified strawberry plant nursery program which became a local industry
producing some sixteen million plants each year for domestic and export
markets.
In addition, Dr. Craig has tested several cultivars of elderberry, highbush
blueberry and grapes providing strong Leadership for the development and
culture of these crops in Atlantic Canada.
He has been an active member of many scientific associations including
the Rhododendron Society of Canada, the Canadian Society of Horticultural
Science and the North American Pomoiogical Society.
During Dr. Craig's thirty-five years with Agriculture Canada he published
fourty eight scientific papers, numerous popular papers and is the author
of several eastern berry crop production publications.
Dr. Craig has received the Leslie Hancock Memorial Award of the Rhododendron
Society of Canada, an Honorary Life Membership and an Award of Merit for
the release of the strawberry variety Bounty, from the Canadian Society
for Horticultural Science.
Nominated by the Strawberry Growers' Association of N. S., the Atlantic
Agricultural Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the contribution of
Dr. Donald L. Craig.
