H. W. Robert Chancey

Newfoundland

Mr. Chancey made his greatest contribution to the agriculture industry of Newfoundland as Director of the Agriculture Research Station. His service received Canadian recognition with his election as - Fellow of' Agricultural Institute of Canada - in 1983, which climaxed his 32 years with the Department of· Agriculture.

Mr. Chancey was-born in St. John's, Newfoundland, and received his elementary and high school education in the city.

Prior to joining the Canada Department of Agriculture as a soil surveyor, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy and in the Newfoundland Range Force. Resigning in 1945 to enter the University of British Columbia, he graduated with a Bachelor and M. Sc. in Agriculture.

He became the Director of the St. John's West Research Station in 1956. In 1967 Mv. Chancey was seconded by the Newfoundland Government to act as Deputy Minister, of Agriculture, Department of Mines, Agriculture and Resources, until 1968, at which time he returned to his duties as Director of the Agriculture Canada Research Station. In addition to his post as Director, Mr. Chancey was appointed in 1977 as the Chief Liaison Officer for the Province of Newfoundland, an added responsibility which he held until 1981. He is a recipient of the Centennial Medal and was a member of numerous committees such as Agriculture Canada Liaison Committee, APASCC, Federal-Provincial Swine Committee, and the Newfoundland Farm Products Corporation Board of Directors.

He is married and Bob and Gwenda have three children, Glynn at McGill University, Montreal; Catrin at St. John's and Bethan at Vancouver. Mr. Chancey has been active for many years with the Avalon Consolidated School Board as Chairman. He has maintained a strong - interest in and encouraged farmer organizations throughout his career.
