Harry Fletcher Carter
New Brunswick
Harry Fletcher Carter of Pointe de Bute, New Brunswick, a descendant
of the first Carter who came to the Isthmus of Chignecto in the Yorkshire
(England) emigration of 1774, will long be remembered as an ardent and
enthusiastic breeder and showman of Shorthorn cattle and, in the 1920's
and 1930's, of silver foxes.
Mr. Carter purchased his first purebred Shorthorn female in 1909 and,
from the progeny of this foundation animal, he developed the well- known
Chignecto Farm Shorthorn herd with which he remained actively identified
until advancing years necessitated the disposal of this herd in 1963.
At time of dispersal, this herd was recognized as being of outstanding
quality with entries from this herd competing regularly on the livestock
show circuit in the Maritime Provinces, the Maritime Spring Show and Sale,
and at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
From this herd, during a period covering over half a century, many animals
were sold to breeders in the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, Ontario and the
United States, who looked to the Carter herd for replacement seed stock
of superior quality and conformation. Mr. Carter, moreover, was one who
took an active interest in and gave unstintingly of his time, his talents,
and his substance to numerous agricultural and breed organizations including
the Botsford and Westmorland Agricultural Society, the Maritime Stock
Breeders Association, the Maritime Spring Show and Sale Association, the
Canadian Shorthorn Association, the Maritime Shorthorn Association, and
the New Brunswick Shorthorn Association of which he was Honourary President
at the time of his death.
