Albert Clarence Badcock
Newfoundland
Albert Clarence Badcock was born in 1911 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland.
He attended Memorial University from 1929 to 1932 and the Nova Scotia
Agricultural College from 1939 to 1942.
His efforts in the administrative area served to advance agriculture
in Newfoundland. Mr. Badcock taught briefly and later was employed by
the Newfoundland Government. In 1934 he assumed the position of Manager
of the Land Settlement Board which became part of the Department of Natural
Resources in 1937. In 1953, after the merger between the Division of Agriculture
and Land Settlement within the Department of Mines and Resources, Mr.
Badcock was appointed Director of the new Agricultural Division.
Between October 1969 and May 1970, Mr. Badcock was Chairman and Member
of the Board of the Newfoundland Farm Products Corporation. He resigned
in 1970 in order to become Chairman of the Newfoundland Marketing Board,
a position he held until he retired in 1976 after 42 years of service.
Mr. Badcock' s efficient administrative skills, coupled with sound judgement
and initiative led to the improvement and expansion of agricultural development
in Newfoundland.
During this time, Bogland Reclamation projects were undertaken and the
Land Development policy was expanded to provide assistance to a larger
number of farmers.
Poultry farming increased and notable improvement occurred in sheep and
cattle raising during this period as well. Vegetable production was placed
on a more sound basis and acreages of cultivated land increased along
with improvements in farm mechanization. The Farm Development Loan Board
made available funds for expanding farms.
These and other benefits derived by Newfoundland agriculture merit Clarence
Badcock' s induction to the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.
