Reginald C. Acton
New
Brunswick
Reginald C. Acton is a name synonymous with the Shorthorn breed of cattle
not only in New Brunswick and in the Atlantic Region, but throughout Canada.
In 1946, after taking his discharge from the Canadian Armed Forces, Reg
Acton entered farming and purchased his first registered animal.
From this initial farm consisting of 200 acres, under his careful guidance,
what became known as Actondale Farms Limited, grew to over 3,300 acres
with 1,200 head of cattle.
In order to fill his requirements for feedlot cattle, Mr. Acton purchased
feeders from every area of the Maritime Provinces and in doing so, developed
a reputation as a livestock judge of superior ability. He has been frequently
called on to judge beef cattle at shows throughout the region.
Over the years, Reg Acton has maintained a keen interest in Shorthorn
cattle and in providing steers for competition.
Mr. Acton currently is the longest continuous exhibitor at the New Brunswick
Provincial Livestock Show, having exhibited every year for the past 35
years and for an even longer period of time at the Sackville Regional
Shorthorn Show.
An active participant in many agriculture and community organizations,
he helped to establish the Silver Lake 4—H Beef Club and has been a firm
supporter ever since.
After retiring from Actondale Farms Limited in 1977, he went on to establish
StoreView Farms which he still operates. As a producer, exhibitor and
judge of beef cattle, Reg Acton has made a major contribution to agriculture.
Nominated by the N. B. Cattle Marketing Agency, Reg Acton is deserving
of induction into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.
