Environmental Science Program
Are you
concerned about the health of our planet?
Do you enjoy the outdoors and exploring our natural
environment?
Will you take action to preserve our natural heritage?

Your quality of life in tomorrow’s world will largely
depend on the ability of humankind to solve some extremely complex
environmental issues. By pursuing a B.Sc. in Environmental Science,
you can make a difference in the earth’s future. Environmental
Science is a field for the future!
Welcome to the Environmental Science Program at NSAC
The Environmental Science program allows you to pursue your
studies in a wide range of subject areas. Within the Environmental
Science major, you can select a specialty from:
- Environmental Biology
- Environmental Chemistry
- Environmental Economics
- Environmental Soil Science
- Waste Management
- Pest Management
These areas of study encompass some of the better-known issues
in environmental science, a field that studies how people and
our natural environment interact.
Offered through the Department of Environmental Sciences, we
coordinate the program with a team of instructors in environmental
biology, environmental chemistry, soil and water quality, waste
management, and environmental economics. This program is grounded
in the physical and natural sciences, giving you a solid understanding
of the science behind environmental processes. This approach
allows students to use science to identify and apply solutions
to environmental problems.
Diversity of courses, small class sizes and quality of instruction
are the hallmarks of the Environmental Science major. The program
is unique because we use many different disciplines at once
to address environmental issues. Here’s how it works:
You and your instructors identify environmental issues first.
Then you discuss the biological, chemical, and socio-economic
aspects of each issue. Then you evaluate and interpret. You
study theory and real-life examples in class. Then you head
outside for the more practical aspects of field sampling and
laboratory analysis. We often use the Bio-Environmental Engineering
Centre (BEEC), a research and demonstration facility operated
jointly by NSAC and Dalhousie University. The facility is located
quite close to campus.
