Amazing Agzone Race 2010
For teenagers who think agriculture is only about cows and chickens, they were in for a big surprise. Last Thursday and Friday, close to 300 grade eight students visited NSAC for the Amazing Agzone Race.
"AgZone at NSAC showcases some of the interesting aspects of agriculture which today's grade eight students might not expect,” said Judy Grant, Agricultural Awareness Coordinator.
AgZone, an interactive field trip for 14-year-olds, is an agricultural awareness initiative of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and NSAC. The race is a fun, yet competitive way, to get adolescents interested and excited about agriculture.
“Even the guides at the event - who were agricultural professionals and graduate students, have a chance to talk to the students about their role in agriculture. All of this helps us raise awareness about educational and career opportunities in agriculture," added Grant.
At a series of stations across campus, students participated in mini sessions on diverse topics such as the science of farming fish and shellfish, water quality measurements, diagnostic examination of blood cells in vet medicine and many more.
Students raced through eight sessions, spending fifteen minutes at each, with a question at the end to test what they’ve learned. At the end of the race, the team with the best time won!
AgZone, held annually at the university, will broaden the understanding of traditional agriculture among the younger generation.
