NSAC Student wins national duck and goose calling competition
Jeff Campbell really has something to quack about. The 20-year-old NSAC student recently won the national Ducks Unlimited Canada Duck and Goose Calling Championship in Amherst a few weeks ago.
An avid hunter since he was 12, Jeff entered his first youth competition, at a friend’s urging, about five years ago and has been hooked every since. His win on the weekend has earned him an all-expense paid shot at the upcoming world event in Arkansas with a potential windfall of $25,000.
“The purpose of contest calling is to impress the judges and to prove you’re better than the others,” the third year Bio-Environmental Systems Management student explained. “It’s a demonstration of discipline and your ability to manipulate the call into doing exactly what you want.”
He further explained that callers are telling a story. “You are judged on your cadence, your 90 second routine and your ability to put it all together."
Jeff hopes to incorporate his love of duck calling into the family farm business upon his graduation next year. The sport, which is fairly new in Canada, is very popular in the States.
