NSAC Alumni Family Bursary

The Alumni Family Bursary, just launched this fall, is a great way for alumni and friends of NSAC to support our students. It has gotten off to a great start but there still are a lot of students we can assist.

The NSAC Alumni Association and Foundation have partnered on this new bursary that provides $1000 and $500 awards to NSAC students who are related to alumni. We asked the students on their application to identify family ties and show us how they were related. The family connections that the students identified were amazing.

With $10,000 to award from the existing Association and Foundation funds, we knew there would not be enough to go around. From the 32 applications that were received, the awards committee considered the number and kind of family connections, other scholarships and bursaries that a student might also been receiving, and things such as marks, to finally came up with a list of seven who would receive $1,000 awards and six who would get $500 bursaries.

We wished we could have awarded something to all of the students who applied, but we needed three times the funding for that. Our objective is to have enough in future years to sustain the bursary and cover that level of demand. That’s why we need your strong support to build the endowment.

The mail appeal for the annual fund is just one of the ways we’ll be looking for support for this project over the next few of years. We have already over $10,000 from the mail in the last month. This is enough to be able to offer another $500 bursary in the long term. Making a commitment to the fund would also be a great class project and we are encouraging all alumni to get behind it.

It’s not too late to make a donation for 2008 if you have not already. You can send a cheque to the NSAC Development Office (P.O. Box 550, Truro, NS, B2N 5E3) or make a fast and secure donation on-line at http://nsac.ca/donate. All donations will be acknowledged with a receipt that can be used for income tax purposes and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped students at NSAC for years to come.

We hope you will support the Alumni Family Bursary.
