Connolly - Class of 1972
After graduating from NSAC in Animal Science,
I went to work for MacLeod Hybrid Swine Ltd., in Aurora , Ontario.
My studies at AC were very useful because it was all about genetics.
My boss talked all the time about genetics and we used that information
daily. It was a 150 sow Farrow to Finish ROP Breeding Stock Farm
closed herd, which meant that the only way new stock could be brought
in was through AI and it was all about producing the leanest, soundest,
and least aggressive Purebred Sows and Boars and we would then sell
these animals to "Multipliers " to create vigorous, fast
growing hybrid swine. The hands on experience that I got at AC,
ie: tattooing, etc was really helpful when it came to looking after
baby and weaner pigs. I worked there for 14 years until the Board
of Directors decided to dissolve the Company. I then went to work
in Kentville, NS to run a commercial Hog operation for Delhaven
Farms. Again, my studies in Animal Science at AC helped me to breed
low fat animals that indexed well to get the best price. I stayed
there until 1987, at which time I decided to move back to my home
province of P.E.I. Jobs in Agriculture were hard to find so I took
a job in the Tourism Industry at Rodd's Brudenell River Resort.
I had taken a course in Hotel Operations and Management at Career
Canada in Toronto while I was living in Ontario and I also took
a Diploma Correspondence course in Forestry and Wildlife because
I was interested in that area as well. I worked for Rodd's until
1993 when I took a job with the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture
working on the Aphid Alert Program. This was a seasonal job but
I was kept on to work on other projects for Plant Health Services
until 2005 when the lab was closed. I still work on Aphid Alert
from June until September and from September until June I work on
the CAIS Program. I now live at the old homestead with my cat Toby.
We are surrounded by flowers and wildlife all summer and snow all
winter. I often think of the fun times and friends I had when I
went to NSAC. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
