Our suggested Hiring Process would consist
of the following steps:
Position becomes available.
Review of position's needs, complete
position description developed outlining major areas of duties
(in some detail) and qualifications/requirements relative
to duties (required & preferred).
Selection of interview team (in most
cases to consist of 3 persons, one of which outside of immediate
work area of position - if possible; interview teams should
be gender-balanced).
Interview team reviews position description,
assesses selection criteria (assigns weighting factors, agreement
to/consensus on process and objectives.
Advertisement which clearly outlines
duties and qualifications (prioritized and indicating which
required and which preferred).
Appropriate length of advertisement,
coordinated through the Career Services Office.
Development of interview questions (usually
a committee process but may be initiated by chair of selection
committee with input and feedback from committee). Committee
involved in assigning weighting to interview categories and
discusses interview scoring process. Interview questions to
be based on qualifications/criteria listed on position advertisement.
Screening of applicants (may be done
by Career Services or HR Consultant) based on criteria listed
on position advertisement. Career Services office to be advised
of short-list. Letters to be written to applicants not receiving
interviews.
Interviews scheduled.
Interviews held.
References checked.
Recommendations for hiring need to be
accompanied by supporting documentation including reference
checks.
Make offer of employment to successful
candidate - followed up in writing outlining terms of employment:
successful candidate to reply in writing.
