SOIL Apprenticeship Program

Farm Apprenticeship Program Offers Many Career Possibilities
Sackville NB: SOIL - Stewards of Irreplaceable Land is the only national farm apprenticeship program in Canada, with more than 75 farms participating nation-wide. SOIL promotes experiential learning, transferring lasting knowledge to both the farmer and apprentice.
The program is open to anyone interested in learning about farming, aged 18 and older. Apprentices provide dedicated work and enthusiasm in exchange for direct learning with a farmer, plus room and board. An 8-week commitment is requested.
Throughout the Maritimes, SOIL has partnered with ACORN–the Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network–to provide locally-based support for apprentices and host farms. With nearly thirty local farms offering instruction on a wide array of farming techniques, apprentices can learn about growing organic heritage vegetables at Whaelghinbran Farm in New Brunswick; or gain lessons in permaculture at Highland Farm in Nova Scotia. As these host farms range in size and production, their diversified settings offer a myriad of possibilities for those interested in agricultural education.
Organic farms represent a thriving new sector of Canadian agriculture. According to the Canadian Agricultural Human Resources Council, more than 50,000 full-time farm-based positions will be available by 2013. Recent studies indicate much opportunity for new organic growers and experienced farm management; identifying markets of expansion and development for the sector as many producers approach retirement.
This unique educational experience, offered through SOIL, provides skill-building opportunities with direct employment and a wide range of career options. For those who dream of owning a farm one day, or who simply want to learn more hands-on, self-sustaining skills, the SOIL program is a perfect fit. It may also be suitable for those students who are taking a break from studies, interested in trades, and even small business management and marketing.
A farm-based apprenticeship can have a life-long effect on apprentices’ future goals and decision-making. While some former SOIL apprentices have developed their own sustainable agricultural enterprises, others have gone on to work in positions promoting food justice and environmental preservation. For many reasons, the SOIL apprenticeship program will be valuable and result in surprising and exciting transformations!
“Knowledge about how our food is produced is helpful for everyone and not just for those who want to become farmers. Being a part of SOIL gave me a wealth of information and inspiration that will affect many aspects of my life,” said Michelle Engel, former SOIL apprentice of Whaelghinbran Farm, NB.
February to April is the ideal time to apply for apprenticeships. Many farms only offer one position, so it’s important to apply early. Please encourage your students to visit the SOIL website for more information and applications.
See www.soilapprenticeships.org for more information and access application forms. In Atlantic Canada, you can also call ACORN at 1-866-322-2676.
