The purpose of this position is to provide a broad range of highly specialized technical services to the staff of the Sustainable Agriculture Section to support the delivery of professional agri-environmental and engineering services that ensure that our natural resources are used in a sustainable manner. This position will also provide technical support to research that will lead to improved beneficial management practices and assist in the delivery of agri-environmental policy and programs.
Duties will include:
- surveying and mapping land management and Soil Conservation Best Management Practices;
- providing surveys and maps to program managers;
- using computer assisted drafting and geomatics software to produce soil conservation plans;
- assisting with audits for the Alternate Land Use Services Program (ALUS) and the Environmental Assistance Program (EPA);
- maintaining and updating the GIS database of Best Management Practices projects;
- assisting with plot work and trial demonstrations;
- assisting with the maintenance of the Section’s archive of digitized plans;
- scheduling maintenance and repair work on the Sustainable Agriculture Section’s survey instruments;
- performing other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in Environmental Science (a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in Bio-Environmental Systems Management would be preferred) OR a Bachelor of Science Degree in a related discipline with a strong background in environmental science, soil and water management, water quality management, surveying and geographical information systems.

Employer NSAC: Department of Plant and Animal Sciences
Duties: The Summer Student Research Intern will provide support in various aspects of field and lab based research trials and experiments currently operating under the direction of Dr. Derek Lynch, Canada Research Chair in Organic Agriculture. The successful candidate will assist primarily with field and laboratory duties related to projects on soil phosphorus dynamics, and greenhouse gas emissions, within organic systems. Field duties may also include assisting with: some weed and pest control/management, greenhouse gas sampling, soil sampling, crop harvesting and general field maintenance. Laboratory duties may include assisting with: various soil & plant tissue preparation, simple experimental analysis, preparation & organization of tasks, and data management.
Qualifications: Must be enrolled as a student for 2011-2012. Should have a general understanding of soil and plant sciences. Must be able to endure routine, often strenuous work in an outdoor setting. Should be able to operate small machinery such as lawn mowers, weed trimmers and hand tools or have a willingness to learn. Must have a valid Nova Scotia drivers licence and Defensive Driving certification. Interest in organic agriculture and/or plant-soil relationships will be considered an asset. The selected candidate must be willing and able to travel occasionally throughout the Maritime provinces.
