.The Nova Scotia Crop Development Institute was established in the spring of 1990 for the purpose of coordinating and conducting investigative studies associated with forage, grain and vegetable production. Specifically its objectives are:

  1. To provide cultivar evaluation trials in forages, cereals, oilseeds and vegetables
  1. To provide evaluation of new crop protectants and innovative use of agricultural technology for the agricultural industry.
  1. To carry out short term problem orientated research which has a direct application to farmers.
  1. To work in cooperation and association with present research personnel, federal/provincial and private, on applied research pertaining to the above and other such activities as determined by the agriculture industry needs.

The major functions of the Institute are to conduct research on all aspects of crop production, initiate and carry out programs to demonstrate and evaluate new technologies associated with crop production, and receive and administer funds in support of special projects and services. Results of projects conducted by the Institute are distributed through presentations at various forums, factsheets and an annual report book summarizing all projects.

The Nova Scotia Crop Development Institute carries out all its programs and projects in accordance with the procedures followed by the NS Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in all matters including labour hiring, purchasing, contracts, rentals, handling of funds and other operational procedures for which a government policy exists.

Staff of the Nova Scotia Crop Development Institute consists of the chair, Dr. Claude Caldwell, Scientific Officer, Douglas MacDonald, four to five summer student research assistants (May-September) and two fall research assistants (September-December).
