ANSC2004 - Organic Livestock Production
Experienced
producers as well as students new to organic livestock production
will benefit from this five module course. Introduction to Organic
Livestock Production reviews reasons for raising livestock organically,
standards, health management strategies, marketing methods,
and ethical issues. Beef and Sheep, Dairy, and Swine and Poultry
each look at nutrition and feeding, pasture management, housing,
manure management, health, and breed selection. Livestock-specific
information includes parasite control and rumen nutrition (Beef
and Sheep); milk house wastewater management, mastitis control,
and pipeline sanitation (Dairy); and egg marketing and alternative
housing systems (Swine and Poultry). Health Management in an
Organic Livestock System covers concepts of disease and health,
disease prevention, and alternative treatments such as herbal
remedies, homeopathy, and acupuncture. Throughout the course
you will participate in discussion groups and explore Internet-based
organic information resources.
