Memorial Web Page

Rick passed away Saturday, July 3, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. After graduating from NSAC, Rick was employed at the college as the swine herdsman for 20 years and then as manager of the fur unit for 4 years. Rick was actively involved in many community activities including the Agricultural Society, NS Provincial Exhibition, NS Forestry Exhibition, NS Natural Resources Exhibition, and the Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association (CILA).

For 24 years, Rick coached the NSAC Woodsmen Team. He was well respected by both his peers and the athletes he coached. He was always giving of himself, and was recognized for his unselfish devotion to the college community by the NSAC Student population by being given the Student Appreciation Award in 1995. Rick is sorely missed by all who knew him.

Rick Russell Memorial Bursary Fund

An Endowment fund has been established from which money will be used to support the Rick Russell Memorial Bursaries (see below for Bursary criteria). The amount in the fund will determine the amount of the bursaries and the group that indicated their willingness to help will make that decision. All Donations to the fund are welcomed. You can help establish this memorial by making a tax deductible donation to the endowment fund in Rick's memory.

Donations may be sent to: Development & Alumni Relations Office, 62 Cumming Drive, Truro, NS B2N 5E3 or email jjordan@nsac.ca. Make cheques payable to "Rick Russell Memorial Bursary Fund"

In memory of Rick Russell, long time woodsmen coach and Animal Science Technician, bursaries will be awarded to a woodsmen athlete in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study in any program at NSAC. The selection criteria include financial need, involvement and leadership in the woodsmen program, and satisfactory academic performance. Applications must be submitted to the awards office by September 15.

Rick's 5th Annual Weekend - July 10-12, 2009
@ Farmer Brown's - Hillsborough, NB

Join us for a weekend of revelry on the newly developed campground on the weekend of July 10th, 11th, and 12th at Farmer Brown's 371 Osborne Corner Road, Hillsborough, NB. We'll again need folks to remind others as the time draws near to keep that date open and help celebrate Rick's life and stay in touch with old friends. Its a real great feeling to share stories both new and old as we watch each other's families grow year after year. This year Sarah has to tell us how she was able to be freed from the washroom at work when the door knob fell off into her hand.
Please email of your intention to attend or not so that we'll be able to make the appropriate plans. Please contact a few past friends you haven't contacted in a while to see if they can make it. Contact: Mike & Karen Tulkens ktulkens@eastlink.ca

Rick's 4th Annual Weekend -
July 12th, 2008 at the home of Fred and Lisa Brown.

See more photos below
Another Rick's weekend has come and gone. Another good turnout of folks and many official versions of the washer toss game and just as many methods of counting the score. A great time was had and many thanks need to go to this years hosts Fred and Lisa Brown and Family. They graciously allowed us to camp at their green houses and park our outhouse as well. The outhouse seemed to work very well with
six flap dumps at one sitting being the weekend record, I believe there was some discussion of steroid use for that attempt and drug testing may be put into service next year. Nerene was a spendid host as always on Sunday morning, reading us a few very pleasent words of rememberance for Rick. The brunch was
very well done to boot. We also managed to congregate at Rick's gravesite for a while on Saturday afternoon. After a small bit of gardening by Karen and RJ we all spent a bit of time remembering with a few tears being shed.

The attending group had a few regulars missing and there were others here for the first time in a few years. We all made it off safely after our morning brunch with Nerene as she headed off to Church.

Following is a link to Picasa which is a photo share website where all of Karen's picture of the weekend are posted and available for download. Please pass this along to any other interested soles.

The plan is to again have this gathering on the weekend of July 10th, 11th and 12th in 2009 and again at Farmer Brown's 371 Osborne Corner Road Hillsborough. We'll again need folks to remind others as the time draws near to keep that date open and help celebrate Rick's life and stay in touch with old friends who as myself, continue to get older. Its a real great feeling to share stories both new and old as we watch each other families grow year after
year. Next Year Shara has to tell us how she was able to be freed from the washroom at work when the door knob fell off into her hand.

If anyone has difficulty getting to the pictures please just send me an email and we'll mail you out a disc with the pictures on it.

Have a great rest of the summer and we'll see you next July if not before.

Mike and Karen

Rick's 3rd annual Weekend - July 13-15, 2007

The third annual "Rick's weekend" July 13-15 was well attended; commemorating the life of Rick Russell and the influence he's had on all those who had the good fortune to know him. Old friends got to catch-up with those they haven't seen in a while and trade news and stories of friends who couldn't make it.

The weekend activities included fire building, large log burning, newly designed washer toss, Bocce ball, sponge arrow goal tending, fire works and even a birthday cake. On Saturday afternoon we visited the cemetery to say hello to Rick one more time.
Sunday morning Rick's mom Nerene invited the group for brunch at Gaskin's restaurant and. another collection taken was taken to add to the Rick Russell memorial bursary fund.

A great time was had by all and many friendships were continued at this event. Attached is a photo story of the weekend. Fred & Lisa Brown generously offered the group to use their home for next year's weekend. Those in attendance decided that this seemed too good to refuse and with a bit of effort from several of us a short term campsite should be able to be assembled on their lovely property. An empty Greenhouse has been discussed for tenting and recreational use in the event of rain. Lisa will post directions to the homestead prior to departure.

Rick's weekend 2008 will be held on the weekend of July 12th at the home of Fred and Lisa Brown.

Everyone in attendance was challenged to make a couple of calls next April or May to remind others of the upcoming event. Everyone who can count themselves a Friend of Rick Russell is very welcome to attend. If you are planning to attend or if you have any questions or require further info contact Scott Howatt or Michelle Holmes 902 658-2440 or email howattholmes@pei.sympatico.ca or cell 902 393-8312 or Trevor and Shari Dillman 902-843-3483 or

Rick’s Weekend July 15-16, 2006

On the weekend of July 15th and 16th a group of Rick’s friends both young and old, gathered for a weekend full of memories, laughs and lots socializing for the 2nd Annual Rick’s Weekend. The gathering started Friday evening and went through the weekend, ending on Sunday with a lunch provided by Mrs. Russell. We had roughly 50 people attend the event this year.

All are welcome to attend, we need someone that played woodsmen around 1990 to find some friends and join in. We seem to have attendees from 1995 until now and from the earlier years, but we are missing people in the middle. Next year the event will be held on July 21st 2007 at Gaskin's Chocolate River Motel and Campground at 3471 Rte 114, Hopewell Cape, NB.
Contact information is as follows: Tel (506) 734-1904. Phone now and book a site for next year, the office has a list started already. Hope to see you there!

The 3rd annual "Ricks Weekend" is scheduled for July 14th, 2007 at Gaskin's

Woodsmen have established an annual " Rick's Weekend" as a time to reminisce and share old times and make new memories too. This will be the third anniversary of Rick's passing.
