Food Supply Presentation
As part of Graduate Research Day on March 27, 2009, NSAC will be hosting Dr. Shiv Chopra at 4pm in Alumni Theatre for a public presentation.
Food safety and the health of the Canadian public health are ensured through independent research in government institutions not political convenience. How does corporate corruption of science endanger the public food supply? How does government quash adverse or critical findings on products and policies? What do public servants endure when they defy corruption to ensure public safety?
Dr. Shiv Chopra, a microbiologist and human right activist, believes we have a right to know about what threatens the public food supply in Canada. With fellow top Health Canada scientists Drs. Margaret Hayden and Gerard Lambert, he refused corporate and government pressure to approve harmful drugs such as Bovine Growth Hormone, Baytril and Revalor-H in meat and milk production. Today the dangers of these drugs are internationally recognized.
“Shiv Chopra is a Canadian hero. He was guided by science to conclusions that were not politically convenient” says Dr. David Suzuki.
Dr. Chopra’s fight against the totally avoidable sources of Mad Cow Disease, his questioning the Anthrax scare and warnings about mythical safe and effective vaccines are inspirational. In June 2004, Drs. Chopra, Hayden and Lambert were fired from Health Canada without the reasons being revealed. Legal action is ongoing in this matter.
Dr. Shiv Chopra’s latest book, Corrupt To The Core (2009), is a full account of government corruption endangering the public food supply. It proposes a blueprint for the establishment of food safety and security: The Five Pillars of Food Safety - to not employ hormones, antibiotics, slaughterhouse / rendered dead animal wastes, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), pesticides and herbicides.
All are welcomed to this free public presentation followed by Q&A.
