Atlantic BioVenture Centre Established

A life sciences’ initiative targeting the conversion of land based and marine bioresources into higher value bioproducts was recently launched by the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in partnership with the NS Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Office of Economic Development.

The Atlantic BioVenture Centre, headquartered at AgriTECH Park, will be focused on converting the regions primary resources into higher value products such as nutraceuticals, functional ingredients, advanced food products and non-food bioproducts.

It is estimated that by 2010, more than $3000 billion worth of products and services will be biotech, biotech-derived or biotech processed. It is also estimated that globally, biotech will create 3 million new direct and indirect jobs by 2010.

The province will be in a better position now, with the creation of the Atlantic BioVenture Centre, to capitalize on these trends and enhance food and bioscience research and commercialization capacity.
