Athletic Department Update
Oct. 17

The 2006-07 year has started with an excellent group of first year student-athletes appearing at the Langille Athletic Centre. Coaches have done a good job in recruiting and now preparing athletes for their respective seasons. New coaching faces include Trevor Dillman and Scott Read with the woodsmen, Rae MacInnis with Mens Rugby , Richard Jacobs and Kian Tracey as assistants with men's soccer and Donnie MacGregor as Head Coach for Men's Basketball. Returning coaches include Claude Caldwell, Jen Cameron and Laura Caldwell with women's soccer, Dane Brown with Men's Soccer, Laura Lee MacInnis with Women's Rugby, Loretta Totten-Higgins and Dave Fisher with Women's and Men's Volleyball, and Fred Works with Women's Basketball.

The fall varsity sports are almost over, as both rugby and soccer play-offs are scheduled for the Oct. 28-29 weekend. Recreational events have been popular with kayaking, softball and Sunday Night Rec having good participation. Hockey Intramurals have started and the numbers look good for that activity as well.

Sport Briefs

Rugby
Women's rugby have defeated CBU, Kings and lost to Dal. They will finish second in their league and hope to upset the first place team in the NB/PEI division in the cross-over play-off on Oct. 28-29.

Men's rugby have lots of new faces on the field and although they are winless to date, they are improving with every game and in this re-building year , show promise for the next 2-3 years.

Soccer
The women's team is presently in 2nd place. They are challenging for top spot in the league and have the potential to win the title at the ACAA's . With strikers that are scoring well and a stingy defensive unit, they are looking good for the last two weeks of the season.

The men's squad is struggling with goal scoring and as a result are still looking for their first win. Cards of various colours have been trouble , but again there is a good number of players that have been committed to building the team and the outlook for the next few years is good.

Volleyball and Basketball

All teams are on the court preparing for the season. Pre-season has not begun, but good quality and numbers are evident for these sports.

Woodsmen

The woodsmen are sporting three teams this year, with only enough women for one team and two spares. The first competition was held at UNB with Men's A - 1st, B - 7th and the Women's Team in 3rd. After an exceptional year in 05-06, the teams are training new competitors for a strong finish in February.
