Class of 1956
During the time when we enrolled at NSAC until graduation
in May 1956 a number of the class could not continue their studies
but are still part of the class. As we gather to celebrate 50 years
since graduation we invite anyone associated with the class to return
to NSAC July 27-29, 2006 and renew acquaintances. For more information
about the class of ’56 activities, please contact George MacKenzie,
Class Secretary at gem.mackenzie@ns.sympatico.ca

What's Going on at AgriTECH Park?
Nova Scotia Cattle Producers recently set up headquarters
at AgriTECH Park. This organization represents the interests of
1200 beef producers to government and has evolved into areas of
industry development and sustainability. The organization takes
an active role in sponsoring primary, investigative and market development
research initiatives. The head office is located in the Administration
Building, 90 Research Drive.
The Atlantic BioVenture Centre, also located at AgriTECH Park, has
been actively pursuing research funding in its efforts to transform
Atlantic primary bioresources into innovative high value bioproducts.
Dr. Richard Ablett, CEO, was successful in his AIF proposal entitled,
“Creating New Wealth from Atlantic Bioresources”. This
$4.9 Million project focuses on the conversion of underutilized
marine and terrestrial bioresources into higher value products for
the cosmeceutical, nutraceutical, animal feed supplement and functional
food ingredients sectors. Dr. Ablett is located in the Administration
Building and can be reached at 893-4152 or by e-mail at rablett@nsac.ca.
The RCMP is leasing office space in the Fundy Building, AgriTECH
Park, on a short term basis. While not in keeping with the Park’s
mandate to support the growth of innovations in the agriculture
and environmental sectors, the Board recognizes the need to increase
occupancy rates at the facility to help offset increasing operating
costs. The RCMP’s Major Crime Unit and Drug Division are located
at the Park.
The Annapolis Residence is getting
a much needed facelift. The building is used as a residence for
conference guests and it becomes home to dozens of international
students during the summer months during the annual ESL camp sponsored
by Chignecto Central Regional School Board. The building received
new windows and installation of vinyl siding is nearing completion.
NSAC Wins Silver
The Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) recently
awarded NSAC with a silver at their Prix D’Excellence awards.
The award was presented in the category of Best Program-Student
Recruitment. This category recognizes successful marketing strategies
and techniques in an ongoing program. Judges looked for an understanding
of NSAC’s mission, strengths and unique qualities and how
well our campaign communicated to prospective students.
Led by Sarah Morris, Marketing Manager, the "NSAC.
Science applied to life." Campaign, and its integration with
Recruitment’s activities, achieved some weighty results for
our university and exceeded all of the objectives set for the campaign.
Application numbers have increased by nine percent over last year.
In addition, our prospective student list more than doubled over
last year’s list, and we reached our target audience 117 times
more often than last year. Overall web traffic rates have increased
by 60 percent and there was a 12 percent increase in prospective
student visitors to campus over last year. All of these goals were
exceeded by spending marketing dollars more efficiently than ever
before.
NSAC has secured last year’s marketing agency, Allura Communications
& Marketing, for a three-year marketing services contract to
continue our current strategy.
Jim Goit proudly accepted the award presented
at the awards lunch for CCAE's annual conference in Ottawa.
