Alumni Chronicles
As a Centennial project, NSAC has developed a new series of presentations
focusing on the careers and achievements of NSAC Alumni. The Alumni
Chronicles was designed as a series of afternoon social/seminars
in an effort to showcase the accomplishments of our alumni. Each
session will be given by a graduate who has made a significant contribution
since graduation. This contribution may be scientific, entrepreneurial,
social or in any other way which enhances our society. Please join
us for fellowship and fun with our first presentation Friday,
March 18th with Ms.Kyla Pierik, (Ag Economics, 1992) Apple
Berry Farm Market, Bridgewater NS
Kyla Pierik is one of the owners of Apple Berry Farm
Market, a privately owned independent retailer specializing in fresh
fruit and vegetables, baked goods made from scratch, garden center
in a park-like setting and gift items from their spectacular gift
loft.
Kyla grew up on her family Century Farm in Berwick,
N.S. where they produced 2 Million Certified strawberry plants annually,
managed 150 acres of orchard and harvested over 120,000 quarts of
strawberries and 25,000 pumpkins each year. Kyla currently lives
on another farm outside Berwick N.S. (in the Annapolis Valley) with
her husband David Pierik where they produce pumpkins for the Halloween
fresh market.
Kyla Graduated from NSAC with a Bachelor of Science
in Agricultural Economics in 1992 and immediately began working
with the Farm Credit Corporation (FCC) as a Credit Advisor in Charlottetown,
P.E.I. and later in Kentville, N.S. After working with FCC for 7
years, she rejoined the family Farm Market operation and she and
her husband purchased the shares the next year.
She has enjoyed returning to the family business and
is proud of the achievements of the business during the past. In
the Fall of 2001 Apple Berry was presented with the Entrepreneurial
Achievement Award for Business Excellence from the Bridgewater and
Area Chamber of Commerce. In January 2002 they were named the Eastern
Regional Retailer of the Year from the Canadian Gift and Tableware
Association as well as one of the top three Farm Markets in North
America by the North American Farmers’ Direct Marketing Association.
Kyla will be speaking about personal experiences from
University and into the working world of finance and retail. She
will provide you with an inspiring message about goal setting and
first hand information about her business and her own life path.
