Nova Scotia Agricultural College
Emeritus Appointments
An emeritus appointment recognizes and rewards outstanding and long distinguished service to NSAC by a faculty or senior staff member.
Holders of emeritus positions are expected to have a continuing active association with NSAC affairs, as long as practical, which may consist of, but not limited to:
- participation in convocation, seminars or lectures, fund-raising activities; maintaining a research/scholarly activity program;
- being involved in graduate student supervision;
- contributing to College athletics, providing material support to the NSAC Library;
- attending College social functions.
The names of persons holding emeritus positions will be listed in the NSAC Calendar. Both emeritus professors and administrators will have reasonable access to support services, subject to priorities and availability, at the discretion of the Department Head and/or President. Emeritus Professors will be members of NSAC academic department and will be able to apply for NSERC/SSHRC and other agencies funded research grants.
Those eligible for honourary appointments are full-time faculty, Industrial Research Professors, professional librarians and full-time members of the NSAC Executive Committee. The minimum requirements are that a full-time position was held at the NSAC for the ten years immediately prior to retirement from NSAC.
Honourary appointments are only conferred upon retirement. Persons who are not retired are ineligible.

Nomination process
Nomination for Emeritus positions will be received by the Honourary Awards Committee of Faculty Council, from the NSAC community, in the period - six months preceding until six months following the official retirement date of an individual.
In order to have a nominee considered for an emeritus appointment, a nominator must provide at least three letters of support for a nominee from NSAC Faculty Council members. Other supporting documents, where appropriate, will also be received.
The Honourary Awards Committee will review all materials concerning nominees and present each to Faculty Council with a recommendation. Faculty Council will hold a secret ballot for each nominee. A two-thirds majority of those casting a vote is required for a nomination to be successful. Upon approval by Faculty Council, the President will be asked to make the emeritus appointment at the next available date.
Normally emeritus appointments will be conferred at Convocation. Deadlines for nominations will be 1 January.
